  • shootout: ksm44 / sm57 / radial jdx DI / palmer pdi 09 DI

I thought this would be a fun shootout.

The ksm44 sounded most like the amp in the room. It colors the sound the least.

The sm57 captures well enough, but definitely adjusts the sound. it will always sound like the source through the sm57 filter.

The JDX was surprisingly good. It's pretty midrangey, but it has a decent starting tone. You could likely eq it into something useful for live or recording.

The palmer is still a useful tool, but it can't stand alone. It needs to be stacked with a mic. I like that it has a pad, and a 3 way tone switch, but it sounds much different than the actual amp tone.

at the end of the day, i'd consider gigging with the jdx.

I have a jdx I use with my SVT. I can get some surprisingly good tone for recording with using it in conjunction with an SM57. Never notice much phase issues with it though.

I like the JDX best out of all you examples, and the 57 comes in second.
Never argue with an idiot, they will only bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.
