I've been learning jazz for the past 6 months. It's a very unpredictable thing because it's the chromatic scale. You can play off key and if sounds good, it's ok. Then I looked into fusion players like greg howe, frank gambale, and brett garsed. I find it hard to understand the genre of fusion guitar because it seems all improvised, Sort of like jazz. I don't understand fusion. What is so good about this way of playing ?

The colors, tensions, both sonoric and rhythmic; linear cohesion you've never experienced. What I like most is the best of 'em - Howe and Gambale for instance have avoided and worked through what I call " the stucks" . These are eddies in the stream where musical momentum just dies; often very predictably if not downright crudely.
