Members gitnoob
Nice work! Love the neck transplants -- I've been planning to do that with some old Harmony guitars. I rebraced the tops, reset the necks, but then I hesitated gluing the necks back on because they're pretty crappy necks. What would you do with an old 50's solid-wood Harmony that had a crappy fruitwood neck and no trussrod, but a gorgeous Brazilian rosewood fretboard? Not sure I can get the fretboard off without it breaking apart. But I'd love to use it on a new mahogany neck.
Members CTGull
Don't get me started on rebracing old Harmony's!!!! Last year I got hooked on Scott Baxendale's Harmony/Kay rebracing. I even found a couple of Harmony Sovereign H1260's, One minty and one a basket case. My intention was to use the basket case to learn how they come apart, then convert the minty one. But, my opinion has lowered on doing this. I think it's a lot of snake oil. I'm sure there's some improvement, but there's no way they sound like a vintage pre-war Martin. But that's his thing and he's making lots of money doing it. Maybe I'll get to it someday. I found a minty "Note" Old Kraftsman guitar that I did a neck reset on. It sounds as you'd expect for a small ladder braced guitar. Boxy. Wall hanger. I'll never buy another one. Depending on the scale length and fretboard width, hell yea remove that fretboard!! That would be cool!!
Members gitnoob
Haven't seen Scott's stuff, but the body wood quality is very good and they come apart sooo easily due to the hide glue. Some of them will need the top thinned -- they seem to vary a bunch, but all Harmony tops will be thicker than a pre-war Martin. I would cry if I destroyed an old braz fretboard, but I may give removal a shot. Harmony scale length is 25", so some tweaking would be needed for a transplant. Might be easier to make a new neck from scratch. As a lover of old Yamahas I am thrilled to see that they can get neck resets. Thanks for posting all that work.
