Members Haden Olmsted
Hey everyone, I have another simple question. Are Gypsy Jazz Guitars nylon stringed or are the steel? Iv never know so I was curious. Id be interested in trading in my standard classical for one if they are nylon though. Thanks for the help. Like he said but they usually sound best with these: http://www.savarez.fr/anglais/guit-manouch.html#

Members Pascal
If you are after the standard acoustic gypsy jazz tone, what you will need is a gypsy jazz guitar (domed-top, floating bridge, etc) and steel strings (silver-plated, copper wound are the standard: see the Savarez Argentine strings abve). Nylon gypsy jazz guitars are pretty cool, but they sound pretty much like other nylon-stringed guitars, which is not what you hear when you listen to Django, Bireli, Stochelo, Romane or Fapy. Members garthman
where can i find one of these nylon models? Just put nylon strings on a normal Selmer-Maccaferri type guitar. You might need to widen the string guide slots a touch for the nylon trebles (these guitars usually have a zero fret so there is no nut to worry about) and possibly adjust the truss rod. You could use ball-end nylon strings directly or slide a rod (piece of dowel, etc) through the trapeze to tie on loop-end strings. All these adaptions are easy tasks. I keep a standard dreadnought fitted with nylon strings - I play it a lot - here is a little vid so you hear what it sounds like:
