Phil O'Keefe
The original sold at auction a couple of years ago for 1.9 million dollars. Eastwood is now going to make a MIK reproduction that's going to cost significantly less... about $1,500. https://eastwoodcustoms.com/projects/jerry-garcia-wolf-guitar/ While this is bound to go over well with the die-hard Deadheads, I think it's way too iconic of a guitar for just about anyone else. Would YOU play a guitar onstage that was so unique, so instantly identifiable and so closely associated with a specific player? Cover bands aside of course... Moderators daddymack Posted April 26, 2019 Moderators Share Posted April 26, 2019 It is a nice homage, but I agree with Phil that the Wolf was such an iconic Captain Trips axe that it would seem weird. Plus, they're not getting it 'exact' [Pickups are not the same color as the original]. If I were going to plunk down that kind of money at Eastwood, I would be far more inclined to get a John Backlund designed instrument [JB is a longtime Cool Jam contributor, and an amazing graphics guy!]...they have done several. Members t_e_l_e
no lefty, so easy answer to me i'm not a greatful dead fan, so i don't know about this one but you know i'm a lefty and my "main" guitar is a hendrixed CIJ '68 reissue strat because of you know of....so i guess i'm guilty in playing a guitar which is so unique to blah.... i'm not a big fan of signature guitars per se, but i have an es335 because of john lee hooker b.b.king and u2, i have dano and a les paul because of jimmy page, ok my les paul is a custom but you get the idea, i have a tele because of, hmm why did i buy the tele again. nevermind so yes guilty in buying and using gear my heroes used
Members Emory
I'd have to try it out first. If it is a great guitar, why not play it on stage? Do all the mini switches etc function same as original? Plus it is lovely. I suppose one could get a decal of a sheep to cover over the wolf. Did Hendrix think "Gee, folks might think I'm trying to be Buddy Holly with this strat...."?It's only guitar players that worry over what other guitar players might think. The audience doesn't care. They just want the sound you make to be good... usually
Members 1001gear
Speaking of harsh opinions (see elsewhere on HC) this design is visually incoherent and the general effect is right around crappy. I would also site the output of the piece's namesake as consistent with the aesthetics portrayed.

They just want the sound you make to be good... usually Good point. Most non-musicians don't have a lot of gear knowledge... but again, this particular guitar is so iconic and well-known - at least among Deadheads. And unlike Buddy's or Jimi's Strats, there haven't been millions of others just like it that have been made. Confession time: I always wanted a Casino, because I love the sound of P90s, and yes, because John Lennon played one... but I could never bring myself to buy a burst or a natural one - because John Lennon played one. So instead, I bought a red one that looks identical to the one Matthew Sweet owns and that's pictured on the back cover of 100% Fun. Nothing against Matthew (I'm actually a huge fan), but I think he'd agree that he's less well known and slightly more obscure than John Lennon, so it didn't make me feel quite as uncomfortable. What I should have done is tried to track down one of the somewhat rare turquoise models they did a limited run of back in the late 90s - they're making them in that color again now, and they're still very nice guitars, but they have the D profile neck, and I prefer the slimmer C-shaped profile from the early aughts... my '01 MIK Peerless Casino is just sooo darned good - it sounds amazing and fits my hands perfectly, so I shouldn't (and don't) really care what color it is - it's an amazing guitar, and one of my absolute favorites. Now I just need to find a good deal on an old Mu-Tron Bi-Phase in good condition...
Members Emory
Good point on not lots of them out there, unlike a strat. As far as Deads music goes: I lived in Eugene from 68-76. Dead were always playing there, probably due to connection with author Ken Kesey. So I saw them plenty, though I tended to view them as "muzak for hippies". Only time they really impressed me was when Dylan and Dead tour came to Eugene. I don't play Dead songs, so if I somehow got around Thai work permit laws and played a real venue chances pretty low a deadhead fan would show. Guitar I lusted after for decades was a Ric 330 or 60, most lovely git ever I thought (fireglow). Ground into my teenage mind/genes (I was 15 in 65, big Beatles fan), akin to some girl we hankered for from afar in our high school days. Had one of those Rics at GC on last visit. Close exam made me conclude "Nice, but my Vox HDC77 lovelier and better" & I was able to walk away. Like meeting up with that girl at reunion and deciding "I think I'll keep the fantasy..." I wanted a Ric for a year or two after using a 620 that was loaned to us on a record we were doing... and I followed through and purchased a new Ric 610 (in jetglo) in the early 90's... which I still have today. For a long time I really wanted a 660/12 to go along with it, and while I still think the 660/12 is a great guitar (and still wouldn't mind having one), I wound up with a Danelectro DC-12 that was thrown into a larger studio gear purchase I made in the late 90s, and I haven't been able to justify a Ric 12 purchase ever since - the Dano is a surprisingly good 12 string that completely meets my needs, and it totally cured my electric 12 string GAS.
