Moderators Ratae Corieltauvorum Posted August 2, 2016 Moderators Share Posted August 2, 2016 Some years back we had a very epic thread about a blacktop Les Paul...many of you will remember Gibson have been make some boldish decisions lately about some of their top colour, both solid and transparent over figure. I'm a lifelong fan of the cherry red 335, but I'd love to see a 335 with a cherry top and and a nice caramel back. Wine red is another one I like, but they generally tend to be the same on the back....so I did a bit of digging around, and aftre cleaning up with a box of strong tissues thought I'd throw this out there. http://www.themusiczoo.com/product/15767/Gibson-Custom-Shop-57-Les-Paul-Electric-Guitar-Candy-Apple-Red-/ But there ain't many round
Phil O'Keefe
I've always liked red Les Pauls. There was a late 70s wine red Deluxe in the first music store I worked in that I really wanted… but I ended up with a Firebrand instead.
Members WRGKMC
I like having the sides and back dark mahogany the top like this 1952. This trans burst is pretty impressive too. You got to be wowed by that red binding.
Members gardo
Wowed by the binding as in wow is that tacky looking
Members gardo
In my opinion the red and caramel combination is the second cousin to a clownburstI'd prefer darker mahogany any day
Moderators Ratae Corieltauvorum Posted August 2, 2016 Author Moderators Share Posted August 2, 2016 Love the 52, Robbo from Thin Lizzy had one similar....the red binding on the second is a bit much
Moderators Ratae Corieltauvorum Posted August 2, 2016 Author Moderators Share Posted August 2, 2016 Yeah, I'd go with a more natural maybe slightly darker mahogany, but just not the usual oxblood, claret, wine, cherry backs that they usually cop out with. I like the top to look like a top.....like the blacktop for instance

Members DeepEnd
Not a fan of Ratae's first example, the mahogany is too light. My main acoustic has a burst top over light mahogany back and sides and the black edges just don't look right next to the light mahogany. I generally don't like solid colored tops except black, I prefer some figuring. WRGKMC's first example is quite nice though.
Members The F-bomber
Wow, what a blast from the past. I remember that Blacktop thread, the first three or four pics of that blacktop were amazing. If I remember correctly, was that not a rebuild thread? A red Les Paul Supreme if memory serves What was that 5 years ago? D

Members warriorpoet
seriously, why must the Blacktop be so hawt? <
Members wankdeplank
Only because it's a naked hotty in a black negligee. Agreed. Love the blacktop, like the red top (Retae's initial pic) along with the darker mahogany version, but I find the red binding entry rather hideous. Moderators Ratae Corieltauvorum Posted August 3, 2016 Author Moderators Share Posted August 3, 2016 That was the picture that inspired the build, sadly the pictures of the eventually finished guitar do not exist on their original location. Moderators Ratae Corieltauvorum Posted August 3, 2016 Author Moderators Share Posted August 3, 2016 It ran over about 4 years....so do you mean when did it start and when did it get finished? )
Moderators Ratae Corieltauvorum Posted August 3, 2016 Author Moderators Share Posted August 3, 2016 You'll find that's Music Zoo's style of photography, very odd lighting that seems drenched in colour and contrast....I'm not a photographer but they can make quite dull guitars look like neon signs...over enthusiastic with Photoshop filters maybe
Moderators Ratae Corieltauvorum Posted August 3, 2016 Author Moderators Share Posted August 3, 2016 Those Wine Red Deluxes were gorgeous and along with the Goldtops the only ones ever reissued
Members WRGKMC
This is my 40th anniversary model I bought new back in 1991. There were only 300 made and its value has already doubled. Its a semi translucent ebony black finish and has an ebony fret board Its a heavy MF**R at 11lbs too. Black is a very difficult color to keep clean. Any finger smudges show up when light is reflected off it and black doesn't age as well as other colors do. I had enough money to buy just about any guitar I wanted. I really wanted a Firebird but the new ones I tried were junk. I tried a bunch of Paul's, Customs, Standards. This one had the best wood tone when I put my ear to the body. It does look sweet with the cream and gold though.
Phil O'Keefe
The problem with the reissues is that (IIRC) they had 50s rounded neck profiles, and I'm definitely a 60s SlimTaper kind of guy…
Phil O'Keefe
The '52 is definitely a refinish ('twas originally a goldtop), but I agree that it looks sweet!

Moderators Ratae Corieltauvorum Posted August 3, 2016 Author Moderators Share Posted August 3, 2016 Whether that one is a refin, I wouldn't like to say, but there was a small number of 52 red tops
