Second guitar suggestions

Yo.

 

I've been playing guitar for a year now and I'm looking into what i would like as a second guitar. I currently have a Fender Mexican Fat Strat, using a Shure wireless unit, a Boss GT-6 modeling processor, and a marshall AVT 150 half stack. The guitars that i have been looking at are as follows:

 

1. Gibson SG supreme

2. Gibson Flying V

3. Gibson ES-335

4. Fender American Deluxe Strat

5. Schecter C-1 Classic, although I'm leaning away from it (my sister is gonna get it, and i dont want the same guitar as her. besides, i can borrow it whenever i want)

 

Thats pretty much it; ill add a post if theres anything else that i forgot. Just to give you a bit of background, i play rockof most varieties, punk, funk, blues, and alternative (stuff like Primus). Theres a blue SG supreme on ebay at the moment, which i may be able to bid on. The only problem is that the auction ends in all of about 8 hours (it is currenlty 5:30 EST), so fast responses are highly appreciated. Thank you!

 

One more quick thing: im looking to spend no more than 1500 on this, ideally under 1000, which would normally but the ES out of price range. But its a pretty sweet guitar, so i'm just listing it to get feedback on the whole semi-hollowbody deal.

I say go for the 335. My main guitar is a Fender Tele, but I have an Epi Dot that I use as an alternative. They complement each other really well, and I'd guess that a 335 style guitar would work well with your Strat. You would have a world of tones available.
I'm sure others will disagree though.

If you already have a strat type, I'd suggest getting a 24.75 inch scale guitar. The SG would be a nice addition. Are you sure about going the ebay route?

Well, my band "mommy" (bassist's father- he's been doing professional sound and playing guitar/bass for 30 years) likes ebay alot because its a great way to save alot of money on gear. The last time i checked the auction, i would be able to save around 800-900 bucks on the sg if i bought off of ebay as opposed to GC.

im gonna get shot-down for this, but if i were you, since you already have a humbucker equipped guitar, id go for something with single-coils or P-90's. but thats just my .02

Absolutely. A Tele, with either P90s or standard PUs. Sure, a Gibson will feel different, but it won't sound *very* different. A Tele would give you more sonic variety as well as a different feel.

Regarding the guitars, I'm really not a huge fan of the tele. Those and les pauls. I just dont like how they look.

But i do see what you're saying about tonal versatility and all that. I would think if versatility was what i was after, the ES would offer the greatest difference.

The bassist's dad suggests either the V or the ES, partly for different sounds (the V would be similar sounding, i would imagine) but in the case of the V, because it looks absoluteley sexcellent on stage. My guitar center just got one in, and while it was not possible to play it sitting down, i really liked it standing up.

Oh and i forgot to add: im also looking at a few BC rich models, although these would probably sound similar to my strat. Namley, the bich and the warlock.

if you're gonna get something with another Humbucker in it, at least try to get a semi-hollow, cause otherwise youre wasting your money. you've got a guitar that can do the humbucker stuff. but if you want another humbucker guitar( the v), maybe you should hock the fat strat for something with diff pu's like P-90's or Single Coils.

A Jazzmaster or Firebird would be cool and tonally different, if you can find used in your price range.

Even the Firebird Studio or whatever they're calling the one with HBs should be a bit different sounding from the Fat Strat. Those are $1100-1200 new.

And they're dead sexy too.

You have a solid body so it might be nice to get a semihollow.

 

You have a single coil guitar, so it might be nice to get one with humbuckings.

 

Of all your picks, I like the Hamer Newport Pro the best. Small semihollow. Seth Lovers. Superior build quality. And under $1000 used. Hundreds less than a 335.

 

Edit - Oh yeah - You've already got the humbucker in your Fat Strat. Personally - I'd rather have a P-90 than a humbucker. But I'd also rather have a semihollow body. There's the Hamer Newport with the Duncan Phatt Cats - Again for under $1000 used. How about an ES 135 with the stock P-100 pickups swapped out for real P-90s?

Hmmm....the guitar he has is a Strat, with both single coils and humbuckers.

 

I'd definitely recommend a Gibson-scale, setneck instrument, with either p90s or humbuckers. The differences in construction and scale will give a distinctly different tone than a bolt-on 25.5" guitar with a humbucker. The 335 is a good choice, as is the SG. Maybe a SG Special w/ p90s-- or an Epi Casino, which is semihollow with p90s.

How about a nice Rickenbacker? I just put my awesome 340VP on ebay for a very low price.The 340 has the same semi hollow body as the 330 but it has an extra pickup.Ricks sound good clean or distorted.This one has the vintage toaster pickups and a vintage case.

I was looking into Ricki's a little bit, but im a huge fan of how it looks as a whole (not just yours ricki's in general).

As of now it looks to be between the three gibsons. If I buy the V or the SG and they sound too similar, i'll go ahead and change out the pickups on my strat, possibly for p-90's, possibly for something else.

An in regards to an earlier post, I looked at the jaguars/jagmasters/jazzmasters and they look ok, although i dont really want that as my second guitar.

Since I'm a strat guy, and since you already have one, I would consider a hollow bodied strat from www.usacustomguitars.com.

I would go for a rear route and USACG's contoured heel option is better than warmoths... it looks like they also shave some material off the side of the horn for even better access.

USACG's necks also have a feature called "fall away" which reduces/eliminates(?) fret buzz above the 12th fret.

You can choose your desired fretboard radius and all the other options you want.
Avoid stainless steel frets. I tried them on my warmoth neck and you can feel them grind into nickel strings when you vibrato. Really crappy.
USACG doesn't recommend them- though they did just start making them available due to high demand.


Of course you'd have to screw the thing together and buy the hardware and electronics yourself because, like warmoth, they don't do assembly.


But building a guitar costs more than buying one. At the very least probably $1,000 to $1,200, depending on the options you choose.

I just don't like the Fender 9.5" fretboard radius and I also want the contoured heel so it is the only way I can get what I want.

I currently have one guitar- my '97 mexi fat strat with a warmoth compound radius 10-16" fretboard maple neck.

I just need to get out my calipers and measure the neck from my mexi strat and decide what thickness I want and place my order.


If you've already got a fat strat with high output pickups like I do I'd go for a low output SC setup for the hollowbody.

Personally, I'd still put a full size HB in the bridge because I hate bridge SCs. The Rio Grand Muy Grande is supposed to sound just like a Single when you coil split it so that's what I'd go for on a more vintage voiced second guitar.

I was also looking at the Parker Fly Mojo, although it would require another few months of saving up/working. What about PRS? I;ve heard good things, so opinions are appreciated.

At this time, I'l leaning towrds either the SG supreme or the Flying V, and i then customizing my strat with new pickups etc. when i get some more money.

Take a look at Godin guitars. Even there lower end electrics are made in the USA or canada. Great workmanship, great wood, unique styling. I love my LG with P90s

I like the Carvin idea that someone posted earlier. You could pick up one of those and the Agile Harm and still spend less than $1500. You'd have 3 guitars and could do anything you wanted tothe strat. Even sell it. To me. For cheap.

You're in NJ, so you could even go to Rondo (www.rondomusic.net) and see if they have any scratch and dent super-deals that folks are always showing off on these boards. Maybe get one of those Harms for less than they show on the website.
