They needed him for plot reasons, to scheme and betray the Robinsons. I would have put him back in suspended animation and left him there.

Seriously - I think I would have rather lived across the street from Gladys Kravitz than have to share a spaceship with Dr. Smith.

I do not have the balls to be a submariner. There is no perceptible chance of survival if something goes wrong down there.

          Hats off to you.

It was an attempt at humor.

Add Gladys Kravitz to the cage fight. She'll henpeck everyone in the cage with her incessant cackling, and they'll all hang themselves.

On then flipside, Carter was a HUGE Dick.., if I were Gomer, I would'a left a great big Pyle right on his desk. I did like Carters GF, Bunny..she was hot. Pyles GF was Thelma Lou, , but was that at Mayberry RFD? I think Pyle laso had a GF at bootcamp, but not sure which one that was, or if it was Thelma Lou.
On aside note, I liked the Corporal, he was kind of neutral, but I can't recall his name..he wasn't really antagonistic to Gomer IIRC , at least most of the time.

Holy Christ..I can't even program a VCR. Whats doubly amazing is how you could sink in that trank and maintain your cool! I can't even stay in a MRI for 40 minutes, if I was in that damn thing the minute it went under I would be bouncing off the walls. Then again, I'm sure they test you for that before they send your ass into the briney deep.

                        First...Impressive!
Second...There has to be some unclassified stories there you could share.
Third. What's your stand on nuclear energy, and the virtual shutdown of it in our country for electricity?

Green Acres had some characters that would test my patience, the only one worth a damn was Arnold Ziffel.

I cannot take credit for that, I'm quite certain I got that someplace.

Anyway, about Dr. Smith. You cannot afford to lose Smith, a PHD operations officer, in the Crews attempt to reach civilization on Earth again... and Smith , most likely despite his iniquities, was the most brilliant science officer on board a skeleton Crew spaceship, otherwise I am sure 'West', the operations commander, would have had no issue detaining him ,ordering him into suspended animation for the duration of the voyage, or even executing him for Smith's treachery, deceit, and yes, even attempted abandonment and murder of the entire crew IIRC in at least one episode.
Smith was most certainly a psychopath, and even his feeble attempts at displaying remorse or sympathy were pathetic. That said, the only other guy worth a damn was West, the other buffoon was useless as tits on a Boar hog, and likely more capable Schtooping Julie than anything else from what I saw.
That said, little the William was brilliant in his own right, and countered the evil Dr. Smiths ambition all the time. The young boy may have had more to do with the missions ultimate survival, if indeed they were ever "found", than anyone else except possibly the robot who was no doubt instrumental in the survival of the ship and crew.

Corporal Slayter, IIRC... played by Ronnie Schell.

The big thing about sub duty is that no one is assigned sub duty without first volunteering for it. If you think you couldn't handle it, don't volunteer. Problem solved. Occasionally a guy would volunteer and find that he didn't like ti. Tough sh!t. On rarer occasions, guys would find that they really couldn't handle it and freak out. Those guys get pulled off the boat.

In general, being underwater was a lot lke being tied to the pier. The rolling of the waves is far above you. On occasion, I'd reflect on the hundreds of feet of water above me, but there's no point in dwelling on that. As far as testing goes, I recall being asked if I were claustrophobic. That's about it.
