  • OT: Opportunity is dead

After roving alone on the surface of Mars for 15 years, the opportunity rover has finally been declared dead.

    This makes me rather sad.
Strangers on this road we are on,
and we are not two, we are one.

CBS News titled the story, "Rover and out".

It was only supposed to operate for 90 days, so it really exceeded expectations.

I'd say it had a good long life.

Reprehensible as it was, gassing was a conventional and accepted method for execution at the time. It is a stretch to equivocate the two.

Was Opportunity the one that used a can of chicken noodle soup as bait trying to find Life on Mars?

I just read elsewhere that it never sent any evidence of empty beer cans or porn, therefore proving for once and for all that men are NOT from Mars. So the mission was a success!

Maybe some band of Aussies will pee on it and it'll recharge.

But of course there were cats. They DO rule the universe, don't you know?

                  Thoughts and prayers.
If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.

                    This.

15 years when you initially had a 3 month mission profile is wildly successful!

Mars is really a surprisingly hard place to send probes to - many missions have failed outright. Few have been as successful as Opportunity. IMHO, it was money well spent. Well done NASA!

So now I have to go to Mars to be in the land of opportunity?

Yeah, and as the OP said, opportunity is now dead there - you missed your window. Mojo sent.

Wasn't the problem that from earth, they couldn't get the solar array aimed toward the sun to recharge the electrical system? I'm curious how the New Horizons space probe generates power. It seems that it's so far from the sun that photo-voltaic collectors would not be useful.

Vast dust storm likely covered the solar panels over.

Just a guess, but I expect the advances in battery tech over the past 15 years, particularly in terms of size, weight and density of power as well as charge/discharge rates will play a part in making deeper exploration of space possible.
