Why the obvious goal post move from the national debt to oil exports? You must have lost your concentration momentarily.

Doubtful. Trump doesn't appear to be the type to hide. If anything, President Pence will hire him as economic advisor and we will continue to MAGA !!! Sweet, sweet Trump...I love him. Libs, not so much.

@figgy - what does criticizing Christians have to do with the impact of oil exports on the national debt?
      🤔

In total energy consumption, the U.S. was between 86% and 91% self-sufficient in 2016.[1] In May 2011, the country became a net exporter of refined petroleum products.[2] As of 2014, the United States was the world's third-largest producer of crude oil, after Saudi Arabia and Russia.[3]and second largest exporter of refined products, after Russia.[4]

      Leadership!

President Trump is dismissing the importance of paying down the national debt, saying he won’t be in office to take blame for the nation's fiscal crisis when it becomes even more unsustainable, according to a report Wednesday.

The national debt sits at $21 trillion and counting. As a candidate, when the national debt was $19 trillion, Trump promised to erase the entire debt “over a period of eight years.”

Senior administration officials showed Trump charts and graphics in early 2017 that illustrated a “hockey stick” spike in the debt in the coming years. Trump said the data showed the national debt would only become untenable after he left office, the Daily Beast reported.

“Yeah, but I won’t be here,” Trump said.

People close to the president told the news outlet that the national debt never actually bothered Trump, despite his public comments about it.

“I never once heard him talk about the debt,” one former White House official said.

That's classic Trump: run up massive, unpayable debts on someone else's credit, declare bankruptcy and leave.
He once said, "I love debt," and that's the reason why.

refined petroleum products isn't the same thing as oil. Now, we're going to be the top in both. You have small orange hands.

You think a large national debt is bad. Correct?

You think it was bad that Obama ran up the debt. Correct?

Yet you have no problem with Trump running up the debt and not giving a crap about it.

That is cognitive dissonance. And naked hypocrisy.

The problem is, neither side wants to make the hard decisions needed to address the debt issue. They fear (probably correctly) that to do so would be political suicide. Republicans don’t want to raise taxes, and Democrats don’t want to cut social programs. Both will probably be necessary in the long run - “growing the economy” isn’t going to be enough by itself.

There is is plenty of blame to go around, and neither side can claim innocence on this subject....

                  I agree with this.

But I’d add that there aren’t really that many “social programs” left to cut unless we start talking about the two big monsters: SS and MediCare

and the problem with those is less the politicians than it is the American people. Most everyone wants those programs; few want to pay what will be required to maintain them. Especially conservatives. (I suspect most liberals would be willing to accept a tax increase to cover them)

The politicians really need to be honest with the American people about the reality of those two programs but they all fear that doing so would be political suicide.

One of the biggest problems I have with Trump is, of course, all the lying. I get his appeal as an outsider non-politician, but one expects that part of the reason such a person is appealing is that they won't lie to us like a typical politician. Instead, Trump lies more than the previous 44 presidents combined.

On the campaign trail he promised to BOTH to get us out of the Middle East wars where we had wasted so many trillions; reduce the debt AND to build up the military to be the biggest; baddest the world had ever seen.

You obviously can't do both. But all those things sounded great and appealed to different folks. So he just blurted them out like the used car salesman he is.

Just because something isn't quick or obvious doesn't necessarily mean it won't happen. Why don't you give the guy ha;f a chance and see how it works out? I'm pretty sure he knows more about it than you do.

You being pretty sure should be good enough for critics of trump raising the national debt.

                        Doesn't seem fair does it.
