  • Judge rules Trump violated the 1st amendment

"President Trump’s practice of blocking Twitter users who are critical of him from seeing his posts on the social media platform violates the First Amendment, a federal judge in Manhattan ruled on Wednesday." https://www.nytimes.com/2018/05/23/b...ter-block.html

Ha! Remember back when we weren't sure whether or not to treat Trump's tweets as official White House statements and then Sean Spicer came out to say they were and Trump's justice department filed paperwork stating they're official?

Well, given that @RealDonaldTrump is now an official government source of information, citizens cannot be blocked from it. Trump can't block legitimate naysayers or trolls from his tweets. The judge ruled everyone must have equal access to engage with the tweets... So poor poor Trumpy has to deal with meanies rebutting his outrageous claims online. Why are there so many meanies out there? Why can't they all be sweet, dreamy, and coin-worthy like Kim Jong Un??
For those who prefer to listen rather than read and who ask these questions: What underlying crimes were being investigated when Trump obstructed justice? Why wasn't he indicted? Why did Mueller discuss indicting a sitting president in Volume II but not Volume I?

Steven Colbert compared Donald Trump with Kim Jong Un:

Both of them are overweight, they have bad hair and they
inherited their wealth and position from their fathers without
doing any real work to get it.

And, I might add, Trump's trying to be as ruthless a dictator
as Kim Jong Un has proven to be.

I’m pretty sure it only applies to official government statements. All of us could still block whomever we want if we had Twitter. We could block Trump!

The problem that this will create for Trump is that as a sociopath he can't tolerate criticism in any way, shape, or form, and is the reason that whenever he perceives any slight or criticism that he immediately goes on the attack. It wouldn't surprise me if there's a tweeting meltdown in the near future.

            Yeah, no.

I heard someone call-in to my local talk-radio this afternoon, claiming that this means that Twitter can't block or ban or censor right-wing posters.

The judgement here was NOT about Twitter, it was about the President. It was simply that the President, as a government mouthpiece, so to speak, cannot block Twitter users, as it (apparently, legally) amounts to the government censoring speech.

Which is a totally separate issue from Twitter as a company enforcing their own standards of conduct.

Well, he is kind of lazy, and banning millions of twitter user is probably a bit more work than his orange-skinned, silver-spooned body is used to.

Reprehensible as it was, gassing was a conventional and accepted method for execution at the time. It is a stretch to equivocate the two.

Trump had been blocking twitter users that had criticized him, which was why the issue came up before the Court. So far he has lashed out at SNL, Alec Baldwin, the cast of the play Hamilton, and Meryl Streep, just to name a few. Trump can't let anything that he perceives as a slight or criticism go unchallenged. How small of him, as he has demeaned the Presidency.
