Moderators BATCAT Posted June 8, 2012 Moderators Share Posted June 8, 2012 ...focused on 70s/80s/90s "alternative"-ish stuff? Like The Church, Bowie, The Cure, New Order, Pixies, The Breeders, REM, whatever After my bands next album release and a few shows, I think I'm going to put that whole project on ice and spend some time focusing on other things musically. One of them that I was condifering was really working on my vocal/acoustic chops and maybe even playing out a bit like that, doing covers or a mix of covers and originals. What songs would YOU think would be cool if you heard someone bust 'em out in an acoustic setting? Or which ones have you done yourself? Ideas? I don't want to do anything too obscure, but I also don't want to do a only super-obvious {censored}. So far I'm thinking: The Church- Under The Milky WayEcho and The Bunnymen- Lips Like Sugar OR RescueBowie- ???Concrete Blonde- (something)The House of Love- Shine On The Jesus and Mary CHain- Just Like Honey

Members Vito Corleone
I'm not sure that would be my song pick but I love the Depeche Mode idea! : There's a lot to choose from, for sure. If it was me I personally believe that if you're going to make songs virtually unrecognizable from the original recordings by stripping them down acoustically, then it's best to stick with really recognizable songs. I also think it's more "fun" to do the cheeziest ones. It's more "artistic" to take the ones with hidden gems of great lyrics and melodies and explore that acoustically. I'd personally try to have a bunch of both types of songs. So I'd pick something like "People" because that's the one most Depeche Mode fans most DON'T want to hear...but if you take a song like that and make it "cool", then you've created something special for people. Chris Cornell did a really cool thing with doing a "dark" acoustic version of "Billie Jean" a few years ago. I thought that was brilliant. I'd be looking a lot of songs like that that everyone knows but it's the last thing they'd expect you to do. You could probably do something similar with stuff like "Always Something There to Remind Me" or "Hold Me Now".
Members kmart
Acoustic Depeche gold = Personal Jesus For Bowie, depends on if you want up or down tempo...Starman is good, or Space Oddity, TVC15, Ziggy obviously, I've heard great acoustic versions of China Girl, etc. A LOT of early REM material to mine Lot of Replacements would work

Moderators Lee Knight Posted June 8, 2012 Moderators Share Posted June 8, 2012 Not an indie/alt tune per se, but No Diggity by Blackstreet would be cool in this context. Members Yer Blues
Cornell really belted it out on his version of Bille Jean. I tried it and couldn't do it, but I don't have a voice anywhere near as good as his. There are cool acoustic versions of Mad World out there. I've been meaning to learn it. If you really want to simplify it just pick stuff from MTVs Unplugged that fits what you are looking for... ton of stuff to choose from there. Moderators Lee Knight Posted June 9, 2012 Moderators Share Posted June 9, 2012 It is cool. But let's not discount the idea of coming up with fresh arrangements.
