Members MrLeadFoot
I've seen a bunch of questions on the web about how to mount Colorstrip Minis on main speakers, so I thought I'd post some pics on how I did mine. All told, I think I spent about $17 in materials, and I designed them so I can just stick the lights in my lighting bag without having to remove the mounts - the mounts weigh next to nothing, and take up only 3/4" of space! ;-) I used 2" x 3/8" Oak boards from Home Depot for the base(s), and used a threaded plastic knob from OSH Hardware (like what comes on some lawn mowers) on the middle post. I can swivel the lights, and tighten the knob to just snug for final positioning adjustments. Not shown are two 3" pieces of the oak boards that I use as spacers under the top "cross-base" if the speakers are placed on a portable stage that flexes (like those stages they put up at weddings). The stage flex can cause the lights to wobble a bit, and even though the lights can't fall, those little spacers support the ends of the "cross-bases" which prevents the wobble. I could have stained and finished, or even painted, the bases, but since they're up high no one will see them anyway. Besides, if anyone looks too long at those lights, they'll be badly blinded by those LED! :-) The distance from the top of my speakers to the handles is 13", and the 12" bungees I found at OSH Hardware fit perfectly without putting too much stretch on the cords. ;-) It would have been nice to find black bungees, but I couldn't find any in that length. I might hunt for some later, but no one's really going to see them at night (which is when I would need the lights - duh).
Members Mutha Goose
Perfect. It's nice not having a tri-pod in front for someone to trip over. Now if someone would just create a RGBA or RGBAW strip with quad or pent diodes worthy of decent front ligfhting... that would be great. Members jcpatte2
Bill, what's your feelings on using a strip fixture, ala the HotStick, as front lighting versus a par style, say a Fab 5 or HotBox fixture?
Members ipnwlb1
Great ideas here. I was wondering how to do something similar but wanted to be able to adjust the height. This is what I came up with using speaker pole mounts that I sawed the ends off to open them up.

Members MrLeadFoot
Great ideas here. I was wondering how to do something similar but wanted to be able to adjust the height. This is what I came up with using speaker pole mounts that I sawed the ends off to open them up. With the lights up that high, is the speaker stand still stable? I ask because I'd now like to raise the height of my lights. That said, you mentioned you can adjust the lights. How do you do that with your setup? Could you also elaborate on the reason for sawing the ends off "to open them up"? I don't understand what you did, and what the benefit was. Thanks.
