How do you choose new fixtures so they "fit" the brightness of your existing setup?

All we have right now are a few ADJ Fusion fixtures: two Tri FX , one Bar 3 and one Bar 5 (laser/strobe), four conventional par38 cans (pointed at our drummer), and a couple of worklight blinders. Out front, a Fab5 on each side. You can get an idea of what it looks like from the pic below. I'm trying to figure out what we could get (either moving heads or scanners) that wouldn't get washed out, but also wouldn't overpower everything else. I have no idea how to guage how bright a fixture will be without actually seeing it in context. I don't want to buy 60W fixtures if all I need are 30W. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Mike

Both Chauvet and Blizzard post Lux ratings so those fixtures are easy to compare.  ADJ does not but one company's 30w LED fixture will be much like another company's 30w fixture.

There can be some difference because diode manufacturers products differ in lumen per watt output.  Brand name diodes like Cree, Epistar or Sylvania will out perform no name diodes.

How much money do you have? 2 or 4 Intimidator Spot Duos would look great. Use them to replace the bluish lights (the 2 sets of 4 on each side) sell those and put the money towards the spot duos

I'm budgeting a max of $1000 total right now, but would prefer to spend less if I could. I could get two of the Intimidator Spot Duos for that. Would they be somewhat underpowered at 10W each?

I was looking at the American DJ Inno Spot LED fixtures. 50W and under $500 each, at least on ebay. I could buy two now and two more probably before the end of summer.

The bluish lights are actually RGB wash/strobe/pinspot combo units. They do very well for us, so I'm not sure I want to let go of them quite yet. If you're not familiar with them, here is a vid from the ADJ site so you can see them in action. I've really been able to bring them to life now that we have the DMXis system. :)

With the haze, I find them to be pretty good. They are such a tight beam. I used them to replace some pinspot 360's which I also liked. They were 3W and couldn't keep up with my mini macs.

Even 2 I think you would find useful, that would give you 4 moving heads. Tighter beam than the Inno Spots. Like you said though, you could end up with 4 Inno Spots before long.

I didn't realize the ADJ's were the dual style. If you plan on keeping them maybe go with the Inno Spots, as it would give you that contrast with the wider beam, moving gobos etc.

I was thinking the spot duos could replace those really tight ADJ's and offer full moving heads as well.

Thanks for the info! Do you have any video of them working alongside the martins?

I really liked the nice tight beam, which again contrasted with the wider minimacs, full moving heads, non moving gobos, different colors etc. the only thing is you might want to start looking at the truss load. Look up the specs for everything and do the math.

I'd suggest the Intimidator Spot LED 250.  Get 2 now and 2 later for a total of 4.  I think that spot movers would look great in your rig - you've already got the 4 beams on each side which change color and look good.  The Intimidator Spot LED 250s would fit well with your rig and they have a great set of gobos as well as a prism to spread out the beam when necessary.  They're quite small for what they are and I believe that they have better gobos and colors than their ADJ competition, the Inno Spot LED.  Here's a good picture of the Intimidator Spot LED 250s in action.

Yep.

Nice! Are the heads independent? What's the MAP?

Heads are independent and they commented: "Price point for the RGBW is 699.99 and the White version will be 599.99"

I have no idea what the wattage is (I asked - waiting for a response).

The thing I don't like, is this. With the multi-LED you sometimes get a rainbow look to the beam, when combining colors. This happens on the Jellydomes as well, which I don't mind as much.

That's on the Chinese light video. Don't know about the Bladerunner. With the spot duos, there's a color wheel and a 10 white LED. So your pink is pink, because of the wheel not a mixture of blue and red...

You also get non-moving gobos.

But then half the amount of moving heads...

Valid point about single arm vs. double arm.  I can find both the single-arm and double-arm version on various Chinese sourcing sites.  I try not to link those here though, because I think that the American importers who take time to QC things and write manuals in actual english and provide real spec sheets and real representatives deserve the business.

I hate that "rainbow" look to the beam.  It happens when you focus the quad-LED chip so narrowly through a lens that it never combines.  That's what happens when you use a single optic without a homogenization system.  If I were to buy a BladeRunner/Event Bar type light, I'd get the one that comes with 8W White LED chips.  Those things would throw some killer white beams.  Nice ACL look.  ACL bars have been white for decades.  I get the idea of having a bunch of colors, but I really like the all-white look.  Here's an example of the old school ACL bars I'm talking about.  Having some white BladeRunner style fixtures with the 8W white-only LEDs would be awesome.

from the same chinese manufacturer that I linked to before with their white-only units.

I do get frustrated when I see rigs of only beams, though.  I'm much more traditional as far as mover preferences go - I still want a solid rig of moving head spots.  Spots fill up a lot more air than beams, provide more texture on the stage, backdrop, and venue in general, as well as in the air and in the audience.  Beams fill up so much less air because of how narrow they are.

The Intimidator Spot LED 250 and 350 are my favorites as far as what's out there right now.  The Chauvet Intimidator line and the American DJ Inno line are two product lines that I did not see on the direct-from-china websites before they were released, and I applaud ADJ and Chauvet for bringing unique products to market in that respect.  Can you find them now direct from china?  Of course.  A fixture will end up in another factory, they'll reverse-engineer it, and bam, they can make it, down to the labeling on the PCB.

I'm not saying beams aren't good.  Beams can look great.  StratGuy22's rig is good because it has everything, and in the right order - it has enough wash to cover the stage.  It has moving head spots to fill the stage/air/backdrop/whatever with gobos & colors & rotation & movement.  And then it's got beams (Spot Duos) on top of it all for effect.  That's the right way to build a rig.

ETA: here's some more pictures of why spots are awesome.  Specifically, Intimidator Spot LED 250s & 350s.  All from Lights Up Loud, a guy up in the Pacific NW doing kickass light shows.
