Obey 40 as a live controller?

I met a band last week who was using a controller similar to an Obey 40, which I also have, to control their lights live. By that I mean they had 8 pars on trees at the front of the stage. They used the sliders on the controller to control 1. All red 2. All blue 3. All green 4 - 8. White for each musician as sort of a spot. They then lit up whoever was singing in white and used the colors to set the mood. None of this was programmed scenes.

How do they program the controller to work this way?

Could they do this plus add additional pars to light the stage ? Either live or as scenes?

Thank you for any info.

I figured this out. The way the band is accomplishing this is through the customize fader action. Plus I found that scene changes do not change the active fixtures so it works like a mask. I had given up on the Obey 40 as an automatic light controller for my bands but it has cool features I was unaware of for running lights for other bands.
