12" vs 15"...discuss

For a versatile hi-mid box that sounds good on quieter acoustic vocal-heavy applications but are still suitable (if not optimal) with subs for club-sized rock gigs, do you prefer a 12" box or a 15"? I'm considering downsizing from EV SX500's and thinking a good quality 12" box over subs cut off at 110 or so might do the job. What's your preference?

My preference is for a speaker that sounds good for what I'm doing. I don't care if the driver is 12" or 15", or for that matter 8" or 18". The driver size is merely coincidental to the overall sound of a speaker.

IME 12's in comparable speakers are much better if low notes are not needed or if you are always using subs. If you like EV's the EV SX 200 or 300 are both excellent speakers and go for pretty good prices used.

well i use elite 15s now, and just for the sake of size ive been thinking of going to 12s,Ive had elite 12s before and they sounded tighter than the 15s also they had a good bass also. 12s and a good sub in my opion sound great,but so do the 15s and a sub,been thinking of keeping the 15s and buying the new yx 12s, and putting them on top,AHH!! more gear!
