Members mkfs9
Would anyone buy a heavy peavey GPS amp3400 for a monitor amp.or should I go for the lighter qsc equivalent
Members Tomm Williams
Depends, is it an install, is it going cheap? If I had to lug it around, probably not. Too many inexpensive super light amps available to spend lots of money on a 40-50 lb amp.
Members mkfs9
Not an install function band so weight is a consideration
Members agedhorse
Then buy according to your needs. If weight is an important consideration, then look at lighter weight amps.
Members mkfs9
I have one already and I like it.also have qsc pl230 ,s like those aswell I am leaning to the lighter option though more
Members Tomm Williams
The PLX 04 series amps are a great value and smaller than the 02's, lighter too. If the lack of features is not a problem, they can be found used quite reasonably.
Members Pro Sound Guy
The Peavey is just a straight heavey iron amp.The QSC powerlights have more features such as HPF, limiter etc.The QSC also is class H and they claim 40% less current draw.GreenLighterMore featuresFrom experience Peavey amps have always been second class to QSC amps. Members Rdmitch
A great monitor amp is the Carvin dcml2004It gives you 4 power amps in a 20 lb. 2 space chassis. Each channel is 300 watts (8 ohms)I can run 4 mon. Mixes thru this amp with plenty of juice and not bust my back doing it. http://www.carvinguitars.com/products/DCM2004L
Members Tomm Williams
I've owned three different models of Carvin amps and had nothing but bad luck. They made a couple of speaker cabinets I like but not their amps. YMMV

Members Unalaska
The peavey GPS 3400 is a beast of an amp and overpowered for monitor duty. FWIW I have an Alto D4, a carvin dcm2004l and a dcm1204. All 3 are excellent 4ch amps and lightweight with the 2004l being only 10lbs. Surprisingly the dcm1204 has a lot of guts for only being 200/ch @ 8.
