Lost a very old friend recently.

30 plus years ago I purchased a used Genie Personnel Lift from a HVAC contractor going out of business. A couple weeks back while hanging lights in a 12,000 sq. ft warehouse for a Casino Night fundraiser, it broke.

Took delivery of a new unit earlier this week and promptly began to power wash the side of my new house.

I just sold my AWP-30 about 6 months ago. If you don't move it around a lot (ie. it stays on site), they will last a very long time. There are some expensive components, and there are some very expensive maintenance items (like replacing the lift cable set) that can make repair not so economical. There are also some features on the new lifts that weren't available 30 years ago (like the tilt back loading).

It's an expensive piece of hardware, yes, but it's lifespan is a hell of a lot longer than many expensive pieces of software and software driven hardware.

I am currently struggling with network connection issues on a VERY expensive (early version) AT-5000 series wireless mic installation which may not be possible to resolve. There's over $25k worth of hardware and the suggestion that it be replaced with an upgraded version is absurd. I can't even begin to imagine the customer's reaction if I suggested that!

Heck the band I joined last year is only three years old and has had two people leave in pine boxes so far :( . I recently tracked down the members of the first band I played in - only two out of the five still here and strangely enough the other member is in that band I joined :eek2: .

Note to self: Never to join a band with RR !

So many of the acts I worked with over the years have lost members. My first "Rock" tour was Harry Chapin. The list is long indeed.

Any chance you remember the Great Southeast Music Hall on the south side of Atlanta around that time (72-73)? I remember seeing Harry several times there/then. His fatal traffic accident not too many years later was truly tragic. What a loss.

Unfortunately, most of the 70's is a blur. I was doing hundreds of shows a year back then and driving a truck as well.

A lot different than the tours today.

I do have a picture from the Pendergrass tour at the Omni in Atlanta, don't remember the year though.

Yah, weird how drivers just drive now (because of "Hours of Service" laws) - and many tours have two crews leapfrogging each other. A "friend" of mine is a retired tour driver - he occasionally gets calls from drivers out on "A" level tours just wanting to shoot the shight. He still gets offers but has medical issues :( . Strange guy but who isn't in this biz? LOL

My first A level "tour act" (for the genre) was Kate Wolf, it was a good way to cut my teeth with great players and really deep down good folks. Her career was cut short in 1987 by cancer. Big musical loss based on what she had already accomplished and where she was headed.

I have been interviewed a few times now about the local music scene here in the area and I dug out a 25 pound box of clippings and articles. Now that was a sobering thing to do as I have done thousands of shows over my career and the number of folks who are no longer here is awfully long.

[old guy story] I did a fair number of shows over the years for the band NRPS (New Riders of the Purple Sage). For you younger guys, her was part of the circle that was the Grateful Dead, Old and in the Way. The original NRPS included Jerry Garcia, Phil Lesh and Micky Hart. John co-wrote "Friend of the Devil" and "Panama Red" and a bunch of others. About a week before I got married, I was doing a show with them, my old college roommate was opening on acoustic guitar, and it was 2 shows in one night with a turn of the house. After Matt finished his set, the first intermission, a message was delivered to me at FOH saying that John (Marmaduke Dawson) REALLY needed to see me back stage. Puzzled and a little worried I went back and said "John, what's the matter?" He said I really needed to try this new reef, it was really good. So of course we all sampled the wares, I go back to FOH for the NRPS set and it's a rocking set. After the show John wants to see me again so I go back and there's more herb to try. This happens after the second set's opener and by that time, being the lightweight that I am, I am beyond buzzed. Make it through the second NRPS and John is begging me to join them for a tour that is starting in less than a week, but I am getting married. John, being an understanding guy, was cool with it, but every time I worked with him after that, he would wink and say he was going to need me back stage at intermission... it was for my own good. We lost John 9 years ago to cancer, I remember being especially sad because of the good memories over the years. [end of old guy story]
