I have had trigger finger a couple of times before (once in two fingers and thumb) on my left hand. In time (about 2 months) it went away. It now has come back into my finger next to my thumb on my left hand again. This time it is not going away and the finger is swollen and sore. I heard acupuncture could help so I went for a few visits but it is only getting worse. I have an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon this Tuesday to see what he recommends. I do not have any gigs lined up at this time but it bums me knowing I can't even play my guitar. Hopefully I can avoid surgery and maybe just a shot of cortesone will do the trick.

That sucks, bro. I usually just injure myself last minute. Like two days ago when i shoved a drill bit into my index finger on my left hand and I can't hardly bend it. l Had to do a rehearsal yesterday, a gig last night, and gig all weekend. But at least I know it'll heal. When you have what you have, it comes and goes. I hope they can sort it our for you.

been there done that , had the surgery. Its a simple surgery, takes a few minutes. they basically give you a local block to numb up your hand. he will make a small incision , go in and bell out the sheath, so the knot in your tendon doesnt hang up and put a couple stitches in it, and you will walk out. I had one fixed on my left ring finger. It was guitar induced from bending strings. I pretty much gave up playing guitar after that. I think you can rehab to get back to playing status. My primary instrument has always been keyboards. I was playing keys within the week even before the stitches were out. Rock and roll keys doesnt really depend on a big time left hand. the right hand is the money hand. good luck ,,

I'm having the same type of thing. I try to do a lot of stretches with my hand and arm. I heard the nerve that causes it runs right by where your funny bon part of your elbow is, so I massage that. Mine still comes and goes. I get a spell of it onstage for a few songs early in the night but it goes away. Best of luck to you, telecruiser, you have my sympathies.

nerves dont cause trigger fingers, injury to the tendons that control your fingers do.

Then why does massaging my elbow and shoulder at one certain spot cause my fingers to tingle? We may be talking about two different types of problems here, because my finger tendons don't hurt, my fingers are going numb. There are sheaths surrounding your nerves and they constrict and pinch them.

Fingers and hands going numb? Sounds like carpal tunnel to me.

It doesnt sound like you have a trigger finger. A trigger finger is a catch in your finger that will cause it to hang up with a closed fist then pop free as you open your hand.

If your little and ring finger are going numb, it's your ulnar nerve canal, also called the "funny bone". I had to have the one on my left elbow opened up and cleaned out.

Well, went to the doc yesterday and got a cortisone shot right in the joint. Woke up this morning and there were definite signs of improvement.
:thu:
The doc is also a guitar player and his assistant is a drummer. Way cool.

Hope is holds and fixes the problem. the shot is the first thing they try.

Yep, I wanted to try the least invasive method first. There are a couple more the last being an in office surgery to open the tunnel. He said I would be out of guitar playing commission for no more than two weeks.

Thats good news , but I would take it with a grain of salt. No way could I have played a gig in two weeks after my trigger finger. I hope you have a faster recover than I did.

Woke up this morning and the finger was back to its old tricks. How long did it take for your finger to get back in playing condidion?

I am a keyboard player ,, so I was playing keys before the stitches even came out. Its gonna be a while from what I experienced. You also have to factor in that I was not as motivated to play guitar as you are going to be. After that surgery , I pretty well quit playing guitar. Its been a few years since the surgery. I think it really depends on what finger it is. I found playing bar chords hard for quite a while. Bending strings was hard. I would guess its a finger that you use a lot in your playing style. I hate to be a buzz kill,, but if you figure you beat the thing up playing , odds are that that its gonna be a while before that fresh cut on finger is up to speed.

I would guess everyone is different. Guitar playing was just never the same for me, but you have to understand I am a keyboard, and have no need to play guitar. I have not picked up a guitar since i Joined the band i am in now,, thats been 4 years.

I missed this one too.

A specialist diagnosed me with trigger finger back in the late eighties. It actually just went away all on it's own, so I guess it was minor, but I was fearful that it would come back some day. I try not to think of it, but it lingers in the cobwebs of my mind.

I've also got tennis elbow that doesn't bother me unless I shovel too much snow, or do too much hedge pruning. When it does flare up it does hinder me on the gig. Oh well, getting older isn't always pretty until you consider the alternative!

Wishing you a speedy and succesful recovery and return to playing.
