I wanted to do the same thing, but opted for a suitcase instead simply because i can drop in whatever modules I wanted and throw it into the closet when not used. Reminds me of my project years ago when I built a synth from a suitcase organ and a Micromoog schematic. I never made a nice control panel or a patch panel - it was kinda ugly and had the Micromoog functions only. I never found a wheel set or ribbon controller either. But it worked! That was back in 1978. The RCA 3080 op amp was hard to find. My dad brought home a bunch of junk circuit boards from which I found over a hundred precision 100 ohm resistors.
