Using Compression in Short Film...

Been doing some audio editing for a pal's short film, mostly adding footsteps & stuff. But now I need to get the levels balanced between the really loud dialogue scenes and the quiet ones. Any tips?

Using Logic 8, I've got the dialogue split between two tracks, as one of them had some mic/wind issues I had to clear out.

I suck at using compression, despite studying tutorials up the wazoo. I bring the threshold down, compensate that drop by increasing gain, but I don't hear a balance between the tracks. Then again, playing with the track levels sort of helps...but then I wonder why I should bother with compression!

(Been using Logic for 15 years and I still feel like a noob...)
