CMS Author MikeRivers Posted August 13, 2015 CMS Author Share Posted August 13, 2015 Watch the stylus move in a record groove using your electron microscope. Then make an animation of it using data collected from the microscope using your digital oscilloscope
Members nat whilk II
Wow - I guess I'm sufficiently geeky to find this quite interesting. The images are quite cool, but I enjoyed the problem-solving narrative just as much. nat whilk ii
Members Anderton
Yeah, I thought this was cool, too. I had no idea how electron microscopes work. Kudos to Mike for consistently coming up with weird-ass stuff for our listening and viewing pleasure
CMS Author MikeRivers Posted August 14, 2015 Author CMS Author Share Posted August 14, 2015 Wow - I guess I'm sufficiently geeky to find this quite interesting. The images are quite cool, but I enjoyed the problem-solving narrative just as much. Oh, I really enjoyed the detailed explanation of the problems and their solutions. Roger Nichols used to write a monthly column in EQ magazine in which he'd often take the reader through a really complex solution to a recording problem. Once I asked him why he always seemed to take the hard way to do whatever he was aiming for, and his reply was something along the line of "of course we tried the easy ways first. It's when they don't that I have something interesting to write about."
Members philboking
Since we're into archaic stuff, here's an interesting read about converting old grammophone (sort of a record, but with the groove info printed onto paper) back into audio. Enjoy!
