There's really no one else like him that I've ever heard, barring imitators. Had a unique musical vision and chops galore on a bunch of instruments and of course, that voice. He was, to me, the first bass player in rock music to blow past the supporting role of bass in rock and hurtle full force to the front, as equal to the guitar in moving the melody along.
