Brilliant Mastering Tip from Steve Turnidge

Steve is a mastering engineer in the Seattle area and he came up with this GREAT tip.

He includes a couple seconds of pink noise at the head of a tune that he's mastering (of course, it gets cut before the CD comes out) so that any processors with attack times or the equivalent have the chance to "turn on" before the music starts. But that's not all. By listening to the pink noise, you get a quick "snapshot" of what effects are being used...if it's EQ'ed, compressed, or whatever.

Pretty cool, eh?

I called Steve today for more info...seems the level he uses is minus 22.6 dB. He uses the pink noise generation function in Sound Forge, and has a macro to just plop it right into the head of the track.

It really is a cool tip!
