The Village Voice is not amused

...Drama has a major-label deal and a Rolodex full of label contacts, ... tanding behind T.I. on the cover of this month's XXL.

What's odd is that it seems like the guys they arrested for "counterfieting" are actually pretty well connected to the artists and their labels, and are essentially part of the marketing program for the rappers and producers on the tapes.

 What's going on here?

What's going on is the issue of "Mix Tapes" which these DJ's specialize in, and "Mix Tapes" contain unauthorized copyrighted material by other artists and usually without permission, so anyone selling these tapes can technically come under the heading of counterfiting, at least according to the RIAA who were looking to bust someone to make an example.

This is a phenomenon called institutional death. When an organization has outlived it's usefulness, it begins to die. Sometimes it wants everyone else to die too. As a home based music industry evolves, that which it replaces will not be able to survive. So long, been good to know ya.

I understand that, but it looks like the guys they are making an example of are actually the "guerilla marketing" wing of major artists in the hip-hop genre. It's like one arm of the corporate octopus slapping down one of it's own other arms.

It's nice that there's so little crime in Atlanta that the PD can afford to send the SWAT team to bust some guys with illegal mix tapes.

The RIAA has really jumped the freakin' shark.

I think it's true -- the RIAA appears to feel like it's fighting for its institutional life. And I think they're probably correct -- they're on the way out and unless they can seriously reinvent themselves to find a place in the emerging new economy of pop music we'll just see more of this until the last death throes of an industry that is in myriad ways shot through with corruption, from the micro to the macro level.

The music production and distribution economy is shifting beneath their feet and there's really nothing the RIAA can do but thrash blindly.

What's also telling is that the feds didn't follow this thing all the way thru it's natural path.. In other words, the CD's are supposedly illegal to sell and distribute, but those CD's are also being sold at Walmart, and Target!? Why does the trail suddenly grow cold? Or has it?

This mixtape CD is a huge industry, especially here in the south.

Also, the DJ collective Drama & Cannon belong to are known as The Aphilliates, which have major label deals, and there members range from NY to Florida and some are a major entity in the music biz. Most if not all the aphilliates have mix tape CD's out and selling.. So what happens now?

If the RIAA were true to their word, they should bust the labels too, if they don't, then this would be a huge example of their hypocracy(not that we really need any more examples). If they don't, the message is clear that it's ok for the record companies they represent to break the law, but not anyone else, but of course, we all know who they work for, and it's not the artists.
