My daughter pointed out to me that today is National One-Hit Wonder Day. Well, we needn't restrict ourselves to just this one day, right? Tell us you fave one-hit wonders!

I'll start off with...

"We Ain't Got Nothin' Yet" by the Blues Magoos

"Pop Muzik" by M

"My Green Tambourine" by the Lemon Pipers

Darn, and I didn't even get anyone a card.
:)

"Shaving Cream" Benny Bell

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VyNca5ZEuEQ

That was hilarious...and he even used the 1930s voice. I remember that song.

I'll nominate a couple bubble gum classics, and a couple others:

Hitchin' a Ride, Vanity Fair

Love Grows Where My Rosemary Goes, Edison Lighthouse (what's unique about this song?)

One Fine Morning, Lighthouse

Ooh Child, The Five Stairsteps

Vehicle, Ides of March

Ride, Captain, Ride, Blues Image

I could go on for hours.

And, "Green Tambourine" was a legitimately cool song. Speaking of psychedelia:

Pictures of Matchstick Men, Status Quo

Incense and Peppermints, Strawberry Alarm Clock

"Easy Livin" by Uriah Heep - beat Deep Purple at their own game.

"White Bird" by Its a Beautiful Day

"Java" by Al Hirt

"Walk Right In(Sit Right Down)" by Cannon/Woods

"Sugar Shack" by Jimie Gilmer and the Fireballs - if you were ever at any drive-in theater in the 60s you know this tune.

"You Were On My Mind" by We Five - electric twelve string pop masterpiece.

"Don't Say You Don't Remember" by Beverly Bremers

(A great Carpenters knock-off... gorgeous female backup harmonies on this record)

"Pop Muzik" by M

(What can one say?)

"Baby, It's You" by Smith

(Dig the great horn arrangement on this funky Bacharach gem... And why this lead singer didn't go on to a bigger career is a staggering mystery. She momentarily out-Janis'd Janis.)

"19" by Paul Hardcastle

(Remember the stunned, chilled feeling you got the first time you saw this video?)

"For The Love Of Him" by Bobbi Martin

(For sheerest camp value, this woman-as-doormat record can't be beat. Except maybe by)

"Born A Woman" by Sandy Posey

(Why the female victim of this record doesn't just snuff it is anybody's guess.)

"Heart And Soul" by T'Pau

(British pop perfection. Fine production. Still sounds hip.)

"Ma Belle Amie" by The Tee Set

(Part of that wonderful spate of Dutch hits we got in the 1970's...)

"Precious And Few" by Climax

(Corny maybe, but one of the best orchestral arrangements ever in a Top 40 record)

"We've Got To Get It On Again" by The Addrisi Brothers

(When was the last time you listened to the production values of this 1971 record with headphones? Wow!)

"I've Been Hurt" by Bill Deal & The Rhondells

(This is a ska groove before ska hit the USA... Groovy little YouTube video as well...)

"Incense & Peppermints" by The Strawberry Alarm Clock

(In some ways, I adjudge this to be the best-- or at least the definitive-- psychedelic record made in the 60's. Now, if you watch the video on YouTube, you may be floored, as I was, to see that these boys were very clean-cut and white-bread looking!)

"Ariel" by Dean Friedman

(Kudos to you if you remember this great novelty record of 1978)

"How Do You Do?" by Mouth & McNeal

(Pretty innovative little record with great performances all 'round)

"Afternoon Delight" by Starland Vocal Band

(The most sublime harmonies.... saddled with the dopiest lyrics.)

"Once You Understand" by Think

(OK, stop, check please. This is the ne plus ultra of kitsch one-hit-wonders. And-- admit it-- you relished it when it came on the car radio when you were a teen.)

I'm not sure what you're referring to. :o I was actually listening to that, as well as Flying Machine's "Smile A Little Smile For Me" last night. :) Another classic: White Plains "My Baby Loves Lovin'".

Terry Jacks: Seasons In The Sun. Hey, I was a kid at the time - I'm allowed some songs that, in retrospect, I don't like as much as I once did. ;):D

I had meant to post some YouTube URL's but timed out on my earlier post:

"For The Love Of Him" by Bobbi Martin

(How cool is this little quasi-psychedelic video?)

"Once You Understand" by Think

YouTube puts so many things in perspective... There's a one-hit-wonder I always thought was incredibly rubbishy.... But now I see this heartbreaking post under the video U/L on YouTube:

"Whoever posted this song. Thank you very much! It was a favorite song of my sister who died from cancer last year. The song is both haunting and loving at the same time."

...now I feel like a bit of a heel.
