Members blue2blue Posted October 17, 2007 Members Share Posted October 17, 2007 I've come to be dependent on Firefox (I could almost use IE 6 -- but IE 7 just does too many things the wrong way for my tastes -- even though it seems to be somewhat-to-much faster -- both loading and rendering pages -- and more stable that FF. Note: I run my browsers with caching turned off -- which has always given the edge to IE since FF's supposed speed comes from super-aggressive caching that plays heck with things like checking updated web pages.) But, gosh, it seems like FF crashes several times a day. Anyone else having issues? Last time I got fed up with the bugginess, I uninstalled it and installed it all over again but it didn't seem to help much... Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Members Jeff da Weasel Posted October 17, 2007 Members Share Posted October 17, 2007 Safari still rocking for me. I have FF on this machine, but it's not nearly as stable as Safari for me. One annoyance is that on some forum websites (I guess I notice this most in the Google Groups version of the rec.audio.pro newsgroup) the cursor disappears when typing. This might be a Firefox thing or have something to do with a character in the message to which I'm replying. It's quite impossible for me to troubleshoot. The biggest problem for me is that it's a programmer's dream but kind of limited for the non-programming user. I've asked questions in the forum about how to change the default operation of something or other that seems like it should be on a menu but isnt. The response has almost always started with: "First you have to create a configuration file blahuser.js. Then you have add the following [incomprehensible lines] to it and tweak until you get the effect you want." And some things are just puzzling. For example, in many forums, including this one, when a word was coded to display italics, there would be no space between the last italicized character and the first character in the next word. The two words would run together. I didn't have that problem looking at the same message with Explorer or Netscape. Again, I got a lot of technical jabber in response on the forum (I asked three different times, a couple of months apart) including "It's perfectly obvious that Firefox fakes italics." And neither option works. I deleted the program folder, downloaded a new copy, and reinstalled, and that would work for a little while before it would do it again. Yeah... another annoyance when using FF in this board and others that use its software (or perhaps other BB software) is that, at odd times, if one tries to switch to italics mode everything seems fine -- until you realize that the cursor has jumped to the previous clump of italicized words and inserted what you were typing there instead of where you thought you were typing. (That said, I'm glad just to finally have a vaguely WYSIWYG functionality that actually works [mostly] in FF at last!) It's bugged me but not enough to start using IE7 enough to even test the behavior. (I could tolerate IE6 in many ways but they really hosed the pooch with IE7 -- it's certainly the fastest at rendering most pages [with caching turned off or as low as it will go in FF's case] but some of the "features" really bug the carp out of me -- like the "zoom" feature -- when I want to zoom text it's because I want to READ it -- not have it slide off the screen because MS bowed to the idiotic ideas pushed by corporate publications specialists that their corporate pages must look exactly the same on all machines instead of letting people actually USE their friggin' websites. (Sorry to rant.) Anyhow thanks for the info -- looks like my problem may be a skin or one of my FF plug ins. Damn, I hope it's not FireFTP -- which I use constantly... But I have had some of those TV site news clip players refuse to work in FF -- but I've attributed that to a benighted and perplexing choice to use ActiveX dependent players. ActiveX is great (or at least fine) for adding somewhat powerful capabilities to browsers (well, to IE) for intra-net use where security is monitored and controlled -- but it's a freakin' nasty-ass can'o'worms on the internet where there are lots of bad people looking to do bad things to your computer so that it will do bad things to other people. Members bbach Posted October 23, 2007 Members Share Posted October 23, 2007 I'm still using FF 2.0.0.3. Works ok on XP. I use IE on my laptop with Vista. IE is faster. FF has some slow issues.
