What I'd really like to know is what made this person wake up one day and say "Hey! I think I'll tell the story of the birth of Jesus with Legos! Yeah, that's the ticket!"

Interesting you should ask.

It was created by the Rev. Brendan Powell Smith, who also covers several other biblical Lego-edition stories.

In addition, he's recorded a couple of albums:

And made the TV special, "Vendetta: a Christmas Story"

All of these are freely download-able on his websites.

When you use Legos, does that, then, make understanding the Bible a snap?

Yes! There are some valuable biblical lessons on that site, especially for children, so they can learn the lessons of life in a playful way. Like these examples, make sure you click through:

I wonder if they have a lesson on the nature of the Trinity. Seems to me this doctrine which has been central to most mainstream Christians since the Romans adopted Christianity as their state religion and instituted the triune God as orthodoxy is little understood by most...

I think a good Lego explanation might just help set that right.

I don't think most Christians really understand the "why's" behind their belief. That's where faith comes in. It's sort of a gap filler between what you think you understand, and the mystery.

I think trinitarian beliefs are an attempt to resolve different manifestations of God. I'm not sure anybody really understands it.

I guess it wouldn't be a capital-M mystery if they did... ;)

It was on my mind, yesterday, as I'd had a rather pointed discussion with a buddy of mine who (though he calls himself an agnostic) was insisting that if you are not a Trinitarian you can't call yourself a Christian.

So I did a fair amount of research not only on Christian/Christic sects and denominations that don't subscribe to Trinitarian beliefs but also, critically, on the early history of the church and the rather sudden adoption of Trinitarian concepts after the Roman Emperor Constantine transformed what was then Christianity into the Roman state religion.

FWIW, I was raised in Trinitarian denominations (although my agnostic father was also a big influence, intellectually) but never really got it, either.

Interestingly, it was my mom (a nominal Lutheran) who picked the name Thomas for me... I got a lot of razzing from the other kids for being named after the doubting disciple -- but ultimately, I think it was a fitting namesaking.
