It was nice being a DJ, playing a lot of dreck, and finding a nifty little song by Canadian Christian-Communist songwriter Bruce Cockburn that stood a chance on the pop charts.

"Wondering Where the Lions Are" (1979).

An old Tom Waits song that also mentions Chuck E. Weiss.

"I Wish I Was in New Orleans," (1976).

Well, I wish I was in New Orleans

I can see it in my dreams

arm in arm down Burgundy

a bottle and my friends and me

hoist up a few tall cool ones

play some pool and listen to that

tenor saxophone calling me home

and I can hear the band begin

When The Saints Go Marching In

by the whiskers on my chin

New Orleans I'll be there

I'll drink you under the table

be red nose go for walks

the old haunts what I wants

is red beans and rice

and wear the dress I like so well

meet me at the old saloon

make sure there's a Dixie moon

New Orleans I'll be there

and deal the cards roll the dice

if it ain't that ole Chuck E. Weiss

and Clayborn Avenue me and you

Sam Jones and all

and I wish I was in New Orleans

I can see it in my dreams

arm in arm down Burgundy

a bottle and my friends and me

New Orleans, I'll be there

I followed Cockburn from about '79 on, but his discography goes back all the way to '70. And he's going to be in Austin here Nov 15th....a long career.

Yes, Mr. C can be heavy company at times, as fellow Canadian Joni says about herself somewhere.

Pacing The Cage - works that metaphor so well. What's he on about? Death? The Rilke poem about the Tiger pacing in the cage? The limits of the individual? Life on earth? The body? Some temporary stuckness in life? All or none of these? Take your pick - I think it's a great song:

Wonderful! I love the easy tenor of his voice (in the sense of the 2nd definition of the word), and the bass solo toward the end. The song's meaning? I think we're all pacing the cage to one degree or another.

This song ^ reminds me that "Wondering Where the Lions Are" is not my favorite Bruce Cockburn song by any stretch. Two in particular come to mind...

"The Coldest Night of the Year." (Man, I love his bass player!)

And "How I Spent My Fall Vacation."
