You Too?

I wrote this as a joke over on the March Challenge? thread. It's March 15th after all. Could this be a rock song? It's supposed to be light and funny and certainly not ponderously pretentious. So no, I'm not going for Queensrych/Maiden/Dio territory. But it could be a tongue in cheek jangle pop sort of deal. ?

Or not. Cause frankly, the subject matter is by nature tedious. Or not...

Updating here as I go:

You Too?

It's such a marvelous morning!

As I ride under the triumphal arch

It's just another day, like any other any day

Meetings, more meetings, meet the day away

What rubbish, "Beware the ides of March!?!

What's a king to do?

Just what is a king to do?

Everyone's got an opinion

Now you Seer? You too?

You too? You too?

The day has come and nothing

Seer, your prediction was wrong!

I stand before you, sound body and mind

The soothsayer smiled and returned in kind

"Aye Caesar, it's come but not gone!"

What's an emperor to do?

Just what is an emperor to do?

Everyone's got an opinion

Now you Seer? You too?

You too? You too?

Mark Antony's got my back

He'd protect me with his life

Surely I'll be safe at the Senate session

Though something's off with Casca's facial expression

Shouting "Help Brothers!" while he buries the knife

What's a dictator to do?

Just what is a dictator to do?

Each taking their turn with the dagger

Now you Brutus? You too?

You too? You too?

Wow, I just got the melody in my head. I'd work up a youtube tonight but I'm in dental surgery in a couple hours. 2 words that should never go together. Dental... and surgery. Novocaine totally rocks my articulation. Of course, so does deep oil rig drillin in my mouth.

Anyway... anyone have any suggestions on any clumsy bits or unclear story?

Yeah, there are none. ;)

Off to the square then the Theater of Pompey

Scoffing, "Beware the ides of March!?!?"

Too left field? By the way, whatever happened to Remus?

I'll tell ya... my grasp of the facts was a little (ok, a lot) shaky. So, I really just read the Wiki on Caesar and Ides of March and kept the cast to the key players. I don't want to assume anyone knows anything. Other than et tu Brutus? I've got to make that assumption for it to mean anything. So I am keeping to a small cast.

Caesar - our protagonist

Seer/Soothsayer - provider of the prediction

Casca - drawing first blood and calling to arms

Mark Antony - Caesar's absent protector

Brutus - the unlikely (in Caesar's eyes) turncoat

That's already too many, probably. Mark Antony could probably be dropped without it missing anything. Though I think it adds credence to Caesar's sense of security.

I had to look up every last one of them actually. But I once co-wrote a song called "Uncle Romulus... whatever happened to your brother Remus"... and thought I'd wow you with my deep understanding of Roman history. ;)

Yeh - its totally cool

Love this line

And surely I'll be safe at the Senate session

Though something seems odd with Casca's facial expression

That last line seems to contain too many syllables.

How about:

Though Casca is showing an odd expression...?

Or brutal expression?

It looks like a project that could unfold in unexpected ways.

Just check up on a couple of details :

Was it known as the 'Roman Arch' or something else at the time?

Pompei and Rome are in different geographical locations, so was there a Theatre of Pompei in Rome?

Obviously Caesar wouldn't have referred to himself as a dictator, so I'll be interested to hear how you pull this off when singing the line to obtain comic effect.

Methinks the noble Knightus be ambitious in his project. Beware the Ides of March!

Yes, that was the one thing I never felt entirely comfortable with. That is such a heavy word, and no one would ever use that to describe themselves.

Julius Caesar was never a true emperor but in 49 B.C he declared himself as emperor or ''king'' of Rome - Wiki

Other sources are quick to point out he was a dictator, plain and simple. That was new to me.

^^^ So I thought it kind of funny him calling himself a dictator. It's not a term I've ever associated with him but there it is. Of course he likes "king" or "emperor" better. But I crack up at the thought of him calling himself a dictator. Like this...

Yeah but... I can't think of a more righteous rhyme for Ides of March. Kinda hard to let that one go. :)

Yeah, I completely hosed that one up. I read the Wiki quickly and wrote it out just as quick. So I was thinking the Theater was on Caesar's itinerary. It's where Marc Antony got held up by Senate forces to keep him at bay.

So that gets rewritten.

^ that's good. I do like "facial expression". It sounds funny. But my line is bumpy. I'll refine.

It's funny that this was in response to a lack of a March Blockbuster. So I did my own Mar, 15 challenge, just babble it out looking for rhymes and facts with the Wiki open on one tab, a rhyming dictionary on another, and the March Challenge thread to write in. Just for a laugh and ended up digging it. I will definitely revisit it once I come down off these pain meds. Dentists are merciless bastards.

Ouch.

Those structures were always built to commemorate a great victory and were known as a 'Triumphal Arch'.

How about :

'Riding under the Triumphal Arch'

or alluding to it :

'Riding triumphant under the arch'

I know it's a bit pedantic, but the detail, the detail!!!

That is great stuff.

Roman arch puts you in the place and takes all the high brow out of it. But I really love Triumphal Arch.
