  • KSR Rhodes Colossus, Orthos 50 & Sherlock FatHead 4 channel amp head

Brief & Accurate Description of gear/guitar:

KSR Rhodes Colossus with Wood Mod
    From the KSR Website:
    Clean Channel
The Clean channel produces a wonderfully warm tone that aims to be the best of any channel switching amplifier. Where most other high gains amps seem to include a clean channel out of necessity rather than desire, the Colossus has a no-compromises clean channel with its own dedicated preamp tube voiced specifically for huge headroom and sparkling cleans. With the included Gain control on the clean channel, one can also dial in a very cool fat distortion.

    Crunch Channel
The Crunch channel is a great sounding medium gain distortion. With this channel one can easily play rock, blues, and country, and then take it over the top by engaging the second distortion mode. Like all the channels in the Colossus, the gain control for the crunch channel is usable over its entire range. It can even be dialed back to produce a clean sound at the edge of breakup, or cranked for a great rock tone. This channel is inherently touch sensitive and notes easily ring through the crunchy overdrive. It doesn’t compress the tone as much as the Lead channels giving a more natural sound. It also takes pedals wonderfully, infinitely expanding your tonal palette.

    Lead 1 and Lead 2
One of the highlights of this amplifier is its two lead channels. The channels have identical gain structure, however they are voiced differently. Lead 1 has a bit more high-mid focus, whereas Lead 2 is a bit more low-mid. One can easily dial in a nice medium to high-gain rhythm tone on one channel and still have somewhere to go for solo cut in a band situation. Each of the Lead channels has independent gain (Mode) and response (Fat) mode switches, allowing four different tone shaping tools recallable via the front panel, foot switch, and MIDI CC or PC commands. The EQs of the Lead channels allow one to dial in a large range of tones, from quintessential 80s rock to death metal.

    KSR Rhodes Orthos 50
One of the first Orthos 50 amps made
    From the KSR Website:
The Orthos™ amplifier consists of two channels, each with its own gain, 3-band EQ, various Bright/Voice/Loop assignment switches, and level controls. In addition, the Lead channel features dual Gain controls, one for Master 1 and the other for Master 2.

    Clean Channel
This channel produces a wonderfully warm tone that aims to be the best of any channel switching amplifier. Where most other high gains amps seem to include a clean channel out of necessity rather than desire, the Orthos™ has a no-compromises clean channel with its own dedicated preamp tube voiced specifically for huge headroom and sparkling cleans. With the included Gain control on the clean channel, one can also dial in a very cool vintage style distortion.

We include a Bright switch for each Master allowing you to add sparkle and clarity to the clean tones. Whichever Master is active determines which switch is used to activate the Bright function.

Dual Loop switches are present on the Clean channel as a way of engaging/bypassing the effects loop for each Master. This allows you to easily engage the Loop automatically for one of the Masters.

    Lead Channel
The Orthos™ Lead channel is based on our signature high-gain sound that aims to give you one of the most unique, round, warm, yet extremely usable and cutting high gain tones available. The Lead 1 and Lead 2 voicings from the Colossus are both available via the Voice switch. Lead 1 has a nice solid and tight mid voicing that is great for rhythms and leads alike. Lead 2 has a lower mid-point and is favored by most for smooth singing leads.

The Lead channel sound is technically fixed to Colossus Mode On and Fat On. This is one of our most popular high-gain tones, and it made sense to build a stripped-down amp around it. This sound is great for metal and rock alike, depending on the overall Gain and Bright settings.

We include both Bright and Voice switches for each Master allowing you to adjust attack and feel for rhythm and solo tones. Whichever Master is active determines which set of switches is used to activate the Bright and Voice functions.

Dual Loop switches are also present on the Lead channel as a way of engaging/bypassing the effects loop for each Master. This allows you to easily engage the Loop automatically for one/both/neither of the Masters.

    Sherlock FatHead

Best way I can describe it is a Marshall Dual Rectifier. Covers a lot of both of those amps and has a unique sound and flavor
Very cool on board tube bias system. No meter or tools required
Can run 2 or 4 tubes and various kinds

    From the Sherlock Website:
The Clean channel provides an array of clean tones that fatten with a subtle compression as the gain setting increases. With the Bright switch in the "Normal" position, the clean channel is smooth and mellow. Shifting the Bright switch to the "Bright" position, the guitar's high harmonics are boosted for sweet sounding rhythm playing. The "More Bright" position gives exceptionally crisp and responsive tones with extra brilliance. A little tweaking will give you access to round Jazz tones, bright spanky funk sounds, through to sounds suitable for a dark smoldering metal epic.
The Edge channel takes over where the Clean channel leaves off; low gain settings are clean with the addition of a slightly edgier quality. With the voicing switch in the "Normal" position, increasing the Edge Gain control is like a tour of cool, super smooth Blues tones. The 'Bright' position of the voicing switch adds a shimmering jangle suited to 'Britpop' type sounds. In its third position, the voicing switch increases the tube breakup for a sound that sets a new standard in classic hard rock tones. Engaging the Gain switch on the Edge channel takes you beyond turning up to eleven! No matter what your preferred setting, the Edge channel is alive and dynamic, extremely responsive to every nuance of your playing.
The Rhythm and Lead channels of the FAT HEAD are this amps strongest suit, providing an absolute arsenal of classic and modern high gain. They cover a staggering amount of variation in tone, from hard rock to utter heavy metal meltdown. Each of the two channels have there own 3-position voicing switch, a push button 'Gain boost' switch for EXTRA gain, plus the Mid Scoop option. These tone shaping tools can be set to make the two channels sound very similar with only subtle variation, or set to give two wildly different flavors. Whatever your tonal preference for high gain sounds or even how high you like to go, the FAT HEAD maintains a unique harmonic richness and remains articulate and musical.
