"I did some research and found that Gibson had made a few giant Bass Banjos back in the 1920's. They only made about 10 of them, and only one or two still exist today. Does anyone know more? They were very large, about 6'5" tall with about a 32" diameter rim and four strings..."

Back in the day, being loud without amps went through several phases. Banjo orchestra's ruled for a while, then mandolin orchestra's brought a more refined tone. Guitars hit the stage shortly after and the rest, as they say, is rock and roll.
