Members KevinTJH
I'm back in the studio in 2 days and I urgently need a bass guitar. I'm working on a multi-genre album and have songs in various tunings. Since I've got songs in standard tuning and Drop A, I figured it would make more sense to get a 5-string bass to do both tasks. What is a good 5-string bass that can cover tones ranging from Indie rock, Pop, Punk rock, Metal, and Djent? The bass will primarily be played through virtual amps. I'm reading a lot of mixed opinions about Jazz basses vs active pickup basses so I thought I might get more opinions here. Budget is under $800 if possible.I really only need this bass for a couple of songs and I'm not much of a bass player either. Would something cheap like this work?http://www.bigmusicshop.com.au/squier-vintage-modified-jag-bass-v-crimson-transparent.html Thanks in advance! Members DeepEnd
I checked the site you referenced and the only 5-string they actually have in stock is the Squier VM P-Bass V: http://www.bigmusicshop.com.au/squier-vintage-modified-p-bass-v-candy-apple-red.html. If you need something in a hurry it should work.
Members KevinTJH
I actually picked up the 5-string version of one of these for 600 bucks + gig bag and accessories! http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Caraya-SPB-3212N-4-String-Neck-thru-Electric-Bass-Guitar-Natural-w-Free-gig-bag-/151949631060?hash=item2360e75e54:g:n20AAOSwFqJWlynh It's such a beautiful instrument. Members DeepEnd
Cool. Not a familiar brand (at least not to me) but it certainly looks good. Let us know what you think once you play it.
Members KevinTJH
It sounds and plays great! It turns out that these basses are actually made in the exact same factory used by Epiphone, Squier, etc.. but without the huge price markup from American brands. Members DeepEnd
Epiphones are currently being made by Samick but AFAIK Squiers are being made by Cort, a different company. Still, there are a number of Asian factories that produce very good guitars and basses. Glad you got a good one.
