At 4 yrs. old I was introduced to seminal Rock/Rockabilly by my father and older brother, Sun Records, Buddy Holly, Elvis, Duane Eddy, Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochoran,, Jerry Lee, The Everlys etc

still love that era.

Late 1950s sucked, vapid pap, pretty boys who couldn’t sing a note, Fabian, Frankie Avalon, Dark Ages.

 

British Invasion..I was garage band age...The excitement, the creative music of bands that wrote and played their own music...what a concept...in retrospect this is my fave time.

 

Four of us young teens had a very popular and lucrative band playing Originals, Beatles, Stones, Searchers,Kinks music, we were booked months in advance, private parties, bar mitvahs, stare fairs, Birthday parties, high school graduations etc. we had a very astute manager who kept us busy, but always made sure it didn’t affect our school life.

 

Even though I played in Rock/Blues/ Reggae bar bands throughout the entire 1970s this was my least favorite decade....with the exception, of the Police, Bob Marley, The Clash, and a few others like the New York Dolls,

 

Disco music was intolerable, I can listen to it now, and appreciate some of it.

 

I loved the hoopla of the MTV 80’s ..dug the mullets, duster jackets, parachute pants, electronica, the cheesy ‘chain saw’ sounding keyboards, upfront drums..

this was entertainment,

not some parted down the center long hairs in patched jeans and flannel shirts taking 45 minute guitar solos, I still, to this day, I continue to dislike The Grateful Dead...

 

I liked a lot of the1990’s and embrace all the music since.

 

So, my favorite period would have to be the1960’ especially the British Invasion years.

Late 60s, early 70s for me. I used to buy one or two LPs a week, for years... Around 1976, I found I didn't like anything new that was coming out - not punk, definitely not disco, and didn't buy any new music until sometime in the 90s. And it only got worse when the hair-bands showed up.

 

As I've gotten older, I've found myself enjoying a much wider array of music and am less likely to be judgemental about it ("They don't want no trumpet playing band, it ain't what they call rock and roll").

 

Now I listen to jazz, indie, classical, blues, and some rock. Frankly, what they market as 'classic rock' (iHeart radio, the only 20 songs you'll ever hear!) does nothing but make me tune out immediately.

 

But music is in constant evolution, and it's up to you and me to create the next wave of art.

I recently subscribed to SiriusXM and have gotten stuck on 70's on 7. While I switched around for the first few weeks between 60's on 6 and 80's on 8, I seem to feel at home at 70's on 7.

 

So, based on that non-scientific analysis, I am thinking that the 70's most influenced me when it comes to music. I was born in 1962, so by the time I came into my impressionable years, this would be the correct "fit".

I have had Sirius for about 6 years. I came with my wife new car. I got it in my new car too.

 

It's awesome, rarely fades out unless you in east bumblef!@k like we are.

 

Ok 5-6 years latter.

 

You don't want to pay 200 bucks for it. Let your subscription run out or cancel it before the charge your card.

 

They well beg to get you back in less than 2-3 weeks. You can call them up like I have done every 6 months and get it for 29 bucks per car for 6 months, sometime depending on how hard up they are, the deals get better.

 

There stock is worthless and has been, but has climbed a few buck in the past years.

Springsteen not bad.

There's bluegrass channel that I listen too.

 

The outlaw channel not bad. Elizebeth Cook has a show on that one., She runs it out of her home when she's not on tour.

 

 

My wife likes the 50's channel

 

Dwight Yokam channel is good I'ma huge fan anyway

 

Classic Vinyl is better than the 7 of 70's.

The Sinatra channel is awesome when I'm in the mood.

40's big band stuff here and there when the mood hits.

 

I never listen to comedy, political talk radio. there's too much RAP and Hip Hop out there.

 

 

Now if you park it long enough it gets repetitive, and they start playing the same stuff over and over and over again.

 

While crusin through the 50's channel one day I got to know JD McPherson

 

That was a nice find 5 years ago.

I get it for for two cars, for a lot less, 19.99 for two cars, six months...plan on squeezing them further when this deal expires.

Maybe some mitigating factors come into play, like geographical location?...I am in the Northeast, 50 miles from NYC, 30 minute drive to Center City Philadelphia.

 

Maybe credit History factors in.?

mine is a perfect 850 on Experian.

I don't agree with your assumption that a band or musician's "from" decade stems from their formation or first hit date. Fleetwood Mac, according to the Wikipedia discography, shows 3 albums from the late 60s and 9 albums from the 70s - and the 70s albums and line-up are the only ones the general public is aware of. When they switched from blues-rock to the slick lineup and stripped-down, dry sound that was on Rumours, etc., with all the mega-hits, they were way more influential than they were in the Peter Green era. Sure, Peter Green is great, but they forged their true fame post-Peter.

 

BTW I saw Three Dog Night twice, live, in the 60s, following their first two album releases.

 

It's just a chat room sort of question anyway, not the bar exam or the Rock History Inquisition.

It's all about the music with me. Many of that 70s era music ... I remember hearing for the first time. I know where I was, who I was with, etc.

First record I ever purchased was Joy to the World (Three Dog Night - also known as Jeremiah was a Bullfrog) with the B-Side being "I can hear you calling" -

Now perhaps they were a late 60's era band, but they didn't influence me until 1972. Oh, Geesh, now you went and made me give away how old I am!

I'm the same basic age as you are, and I would have to say I've been nearly equally influenced by all three of those decades, although slightly less so the '80's. The music of the 1960s was seminal - some of my earliest and most fond memories - and I was very musically-aware and interested, even as a child, while the '70's was when I was coming of age - high school, playing in my first bands, learning the art and science of recording... and in the 80s I had already been playing and recording for years, so it's more of a participatory decade for me in some respects, although I love and was influenced by a lot of what was happening musically then too.

 

You could put on any of those three channels and I'm going to be cool with it.

I already conceded that and mentioned a few exceptions like The Police,Bob Marley, the Clash etc. that you inadvertently, or in your haste, failed to notice.

 

but, you guys liked the 1970’s ... you had to deal with the cards that were dealt to you. (Sigh.)

 

To me, it was, still is, the Dark Ages of music.

 

I’m thinking the very worst of that era, polyester Disco Suits, spun from recycled plastic liter soda bottles, combover hairdos, The BeeGees selling out , that monotonous bass line beaten like a dead horse.

 

I already mentioned the very few things I liked.

I'm just a couple years older and also listen to Sirius in the car. I prefer 25, 26 & 27 over the 70's/80's channel because you'll get the full song. This really came to light when my wife and I where working up Heard It In A Love Song by Marshall Tucker. On the 70's channel they cut out half the intro plus the whole piano solo in the middle (where my wife deftly switches from flute back to piano).
