A Great Solution for the Beginning Drummer

It happens—your child approaches you about wanting to be a drummer! Instantly, your mind races: years of therapy, impaired hearing, being the brunt of drummer jokes—all send you into a panic.

HarmonyCentral_Mapex_mck1232dp_BellKit_HWhy do I know? I’ve been a drummer for over 40 years and recently my 12-year-old son approached me with this same announcement. (Gulp!)

But honestly, drums and percussion are a fantastic place to start for the wannabe drummer and for someone who may move on to other instruments in the future.

But, where do you start? Your child brings home a note from the music teacher stating that a snare drum/bell percussion kit is required. Still in a panic, you're unsure where to turn. You google all the terms and the results can be a little overwhelming.

I benefited from years of being a drummer and being in the industry, but let me tell you via this video how we selected the right kit for us.

As you can see, we chose the Backpack Snare Drum/Bell Percussion Kit (Rolling Bag), part number MCK1232DP.

    SPECS:

    • 12” x 3.5” snare and 2.5 octave 32-note keyboard (F5-C8)
    • Wood Shell
    • Silver Sparkle Wrap
    • Chrome Hardware
    • Practice Pad
    • Adjustable Stand
    • Innovative Percussion F12 IP-HB sticks and mallets
    • 1” Wide Tone Bars
    • Removable Music Rack
    • Backpack/Rolling Bag

Mapex offers other choices, including the same kit with a larger 14”X3.5” snare drum; they also offer a stand-alone Percussion kit with just the bells (in both the back pack only and the integrated rolling backpack options), as well as a Lite Backpack Snare Drum Kit featuring just the practice pad and snare (both 12”X3.5” version 14”X5” versions).

Ultimately, the choice is up to you. Mapex offers a variety of choices, and all of them are very well-designed with your star drummer student in mind.
