if you want a great sounding tube amp with plenty of power, reverb, and an effects loop, look no further. not to mention it looks classy. that tweed! so cool.
im a 25 year old musician whos been playing professionally for ten years, i know my gear. i also design and build guitar pedals, but i wont give my company away.
point is, i have the opportunity to play a ton of cool gear. even with all the really neat super expensive stuff i come across every day, i would never leave on tour without my classic 50. its that realiable and sounds that good.
three band active eq, two channels (normal and lead), spring reverb, presence, effects loop, and a fan to keep it cool
four blue marvel ten inch speakers. cool tweed covering.
this is my fourth classic 50. i keep having lapses in judgement and selling them, thinking i can get something better. its just not gonna happen. the clean sound is so perfect. hitting the front of the amp with my mxr micro amp gets a really biting overdrive that sounds just like the best fenders. turned up, it growls. it just pushes so much air.
however, it is really sensitive, like a well designed amp should be. cleans up well.
i find the blue marvel speakers to be just as good as any other speaker out there. efficient, loud, clean, no weird distortion when pushed hard.
at first i thought the spring reverb was a little weak, but it turns out i was just so used to having reverb pedals with the mix maxed out to know what real spring reverb sounds like. its full and lush and perfect. doesnt get over the top and muddy up my sound, which is good. adds that special demension to the sound without getting in the way.
i had my first classic 50 (also the 4x10) right after high school in 2004. i took it on three national tours, recorded a ton of times with it, dropped it off the trailer, spilled beer on it, knocked it over, jumped on top of it you name it. never gave me a single problem. i had it for three years with the original tubes in it. on a whim i ordered a whole retube for it. it sounded great with the old tubes, but holy crap, you would swear i bought a whole new amp.
im on my fourth now, and this model is a 1993 i think. its a little beat up and some knobs are missing, but that just adds to the cool factor. it looks awesome.
if you can turn a knob, you can dial in a great sound with this amp. ive had a hard time getting a bad sound from this amp. its just so easy.
ive called peavey for parts or other things before and they are really helpful. fast too.
