One complaint I've heard about it is "But Paul Reed Smith makes GUITARS." (Mainly from bass players.) However, your guitar player buddies will probably love it because of PRS's reputation. This really doesn't mean a whole lot, but those are the general reactions I get from people.

Unfortunately, I think I paid too much for this bass... not that I was ripped off, but I should have gotten a cheaper bass for the financial situation I'm in. (ONe word: student!) I bought this bass for $1600 with a retail value of $2000, and unfortunately, I'm going to sell it for two reasons A) I've discovered the sound of a PBass with flats b) Insurance payments! I'm probably going to end up regretting selling this baby, but somethings just weren't meant to be. yeah, that sounds lame but whatever.

By the way, don't believe everything you read in Bass Player. They liked this bass, but their only problem was the cost. The model those guys reviewed was about $1000 more then what I paid for mine... thats one thing I don't understand... you could easily double the price of the bass with options, and aside from the piezo system and 3 band EQ, most of it is purely cosmetic with the AAAAAAAAA (yeah, I'm exagerating) flame top PRS is famous for.

THe basses are also very hard to find. Apparently the Guitar Center's in Houston didn't even know PRS made basses (well thats Guitar Center for ya). The resale value is qutie good on these things.

So all in all, I'll give this gal a 9.
Features: This is a 4 string fretted 2000 Paul Reid Smith bass. The specs are as followed:

Neck: 21 fret Bolt-on. The neck is 34 inches, and has a 10 inch radius. It has a Rosewood fretboard on a rock maple neck. The inlays are abalone dots.

Hardware - PRS Bass bridge, 20 to 1 low mass PRS tuners

Electronics - 2 PRS high inductance passive magnetic pickups, volume control for each pickup, master tone control, switchable active 18V pre-amp.

The body is alder.

Okay the neck is similar to a jazz in its fast feel, but the body is more of a Precision, except its contoured. The finish is black.

Included with the bass was a hardshell case.

I give it an 8 simply because it although it has alot, there are basses with more features (read: 3 band eq) that are cheaper.

I think that these basses look great, though the headstock makes it look pretty rock n' roll.
Sound Quality: This bass is pretty versatile; not necessarily because of a wide range of tones available (there are some), but because it could be used in almost any situation. I use it for a show choir (plays anything from jazz to rock to country) and a rock band, and this bass does well in all areas. I usually keep both pickups full with the tone knob open, and preamp on, which gives me a really hot Fender Jazz type of sound. For the jazzier numbers I solo the neck pup and roll of the tone to give me a warm P-bass sound. I've heard that this bass records well, though I wouldn't know. Measured up against a Jazz and a Peavy Cirrus 4, this bass had more bottom (thanks to the preamp) then both. This bass isn't especially bright or warm, but more of an in between. Very hot. No real complaint on this end. Oh, and the bridge will sustain FOREVER!! I give it a 7 because it has a great sound.
Reliability/Durability: Aside from the afore mention problems, the only problem I have is that sometimes you get a slight pop when you turn on the preamp. Not a biggy, but its kind of embarassing when you're in the middle rehersal. However, this bass stays in tune extremely well. This gets a 9.
Customer Support: I tried to get PRS to send me a new nut because of the aforementioned problem, but they said I'd have to bring it to the dealer and get it checked out. It was already in the hands of my guitar tech, so I didn't bother. (He managed to fix it without changing the nut.) It was kind of annoying, but no biggy. They get a 6.
