Re: Best Harmony Groups

the Weavers, dude! "Live at Carnegie Hall" (1955), they sound better live than in studio.

the Zombies: when they locked, awesome ("She's Not There" and "Time of the Season")

the Chiffons: my favorite girl group ("One Fine Day")

the I-Threes: took over backing vocals when Bunny and Tosh left the Wailers and Bob took over. ("No Woman", "Rebel Music")

Mahotella Queens: South African mbaqanga, often backed Malathini

Sly & the Family Stone, the Mills Brothers, Andrews Sisters, Spinners, Sweet Honey in the Rock, Beatles, Beach Boys.

oh yeah, and . . the King's Singers! saw them live at a college, they rocked the joint, madrigal-style.

I was just doing "tell her no" and I remembered this thread. I love the zombies. I mean, I freak'n love the zombies. What a great group, great name, great everything. Beachwood park, brief candles, Care of the cell, oh man these guys really were great singers.

And, many groups have said that they were their inspiration.
It is a really good idea to get really good equipment.

Re: Best Harmony Groups

me too. I have been a ridiculous zombies fan since my dad bought the (Parrot Records!) 45 of She's Not There.

alas, that 45 was lost when a friend and I decided to play frisbee with it . . .

Re: Best Harmony Groups

I'm surprised nobody has mention the Beach Boys.
Removing the mids from the guitar is tantamount to removing the lows from the bass, removing the presence from the cymbals, and removing the ammo from a gun

*hangs head and shuffles off*

You got me. When I got the CD version of 'Pet Sounds' and it had a particular out-take of Brian Wilson singing his falsetto part, then listening to it added to the whole mix, I almost cried. Perfection.

I should throw a Toronto band called Moxy Früvous into the list. They've since broken up, but their band was centered on 4-part (lead + 3) and they were truly amazing.

Oh, and The Ink Spots! Can't forget them...

Beach Boys
Fleetwood Mac - I love their harmonies because the two female sounds are so different but sound gorgeous together, and then you add the male and its amazing.
Nickel Creek
Simon and Garfunkel - just beautiful.
Bee Gees. Laugh if you will, but they had some awesome harmonies!
The Doobie Brothers

Really? No one mentioned Boyz 2 Men yet? Their harmonies are incredible. They definitely deserve a mention.
