Cruz didn't really say anything very revelatory.  He was reasonable and well-spoken, which should count for something considering the typical level of discourse surrounding this issue.

The only thing I would criticize is that we really can't know how effective or ineffective the original AWB was.  Stats tell us what happened during the ban but they can't tell us what would have happened were it not for the ban.  Maybe multiple shooting deaths would have increased in those years.  Who can say?

Also, the semi-auto argument is just plain stupid.  It makes no sense to selectively ban semi-autos based on how they look.  But magazine capacity and overall size are relevent.  So-called assault weapons tend to have higher magazine capacities than deer rifles and often they have a shorter overall length which could be argued makes them more concealable.
