Thank you Obamacare!
And thank you California for the fast work on setting up the health exchanges!

Congrats on that!
I'm physically ready at 58.5, but I've gotta go until at least 62.5 to collect early SS (don't know if I can make it at my current vocation, though).

Congrats!
I lost right a 48% of my company 401K in 2008-9 & "unhired" the so-called money managers...parked the money in low/no return safe funds & have been to scared to move them from there.
I now refer to in as my "CRP" (Cemetary Retirement Plan).

Thanks. I paid off the house last year, my wife will get a modest retirement next year also, I have been frugal my whole life, and my parents left me a modest nest egg.
The only ingriedient missing was affordable health insurance.
Hopefully others in similar situations as I will be able to make room for others in the workplace now that affordable insurance is on the horizon.

What makes you think obama care is going to be affordable? Its raised the price of heathcare and health insurance. No one even knows what its going to cost. 57 is a long time to go till you are able to get medicare.

The cost now is spiking by some carriers to milk as much out before 2014.
I have a link in the top post. These are the folks in charge of implementing the affordable health exchange pool in CA as per directive of 2014 in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (Obamacare).
I am in close contact with them. In fact they posted my question on their website. This website will be where the citizens of CA will go for affordable insurance. They will have solid cost numbers in a few months with open enrollment Oct 1, 2013.
California is on it.

Great. Now next year we will have even more of your "censor" posts telling us how we can go around the system and swear.
Congrats on the retirement however.

Affordable means different things to different people. What percentage do you think you are going to turn on your investments. Self funded retirement takes a huge amount of money these days.

I am not relying on my investments for retirement.
Thanks for your concern however! ![]()

LOL @ rightwingers complaining about the cost of health care. (I think it's twice in the US what it is in other (sane) industrialized countries.
Congratulations, Shred. ![]()

I see where people state this and am a bit confused. I don't make a large amount of money. I actualy "take home" about less than 1900.00 per month, but I live comfortably. It's not easy as I am a "spender" and I need to work on this flaw more. But I live well and pay my bills.
How much is "a lot of money"? I have monthly medical costs greater than most people....or "healthy" people to be more exact. But I have seen different opinions that to retire comfortably people should have 100,000 in savings and a great deal of additional income and that is confusing. I know that ones lifestyle has everything to do with the income needed to sustain their lifestyle, but how much is enough?

This is a great question quickie.
My daughters are grown and married. I had them when I was young and worked hard to support them. I lived frugally never buying a new car or getting strung out on credit very far. My plan, since having kids so young, has always been to work towards an early retirement. Many of my friends waited to have kids and enjoyed their youth...good for them! My path was different.

A well balanced portfolio these days tends to generate 4 to 5 percent. When i say well balanced it means a mix of stocks and bonds that dont carry a lot of risk. You cant kill off your principal investments and keep the ball rolling long term. So do the math and decide how much you need. Things ease up when you get to social security age , and ease up more when you hit medicare age. Retirment prior to that takes a lot of money
