Midland City AL Hostage Crisis is Over

Best possible outcome:

MIDLAND CITY, Ala. (AP and other sources) -- UPDATE: The FBI confirms they have safely recovered a 5-year old child being held hostage in a bunker in Midland City, Alabama.

In a news conference this afternoon, the FBI said they had no choice but to go into the bunker and rescue the child.  They said negotiations had deteriorated over the past few days.  They then observed the suspect, 65-year old Jim Dykes with a gun.

FBI agents stormed the bunker and took the child.  They also killed the suspect.

Before the news conference Monday, an ambulance that had been parked near the scene could be seen driving away. However, it was not clear if anyone was inside, and the vehicle did not have its sirens or emergency lights on.

Many people in the area also say they heard a loud boom before later hearing that the boy was safe and the suspect is dead.

Dykes stormed a school bus last week, killed the bus driver, and took the 5-year old boy hostage.

Old man Dykes took the "get-off-mah-lawn" meme to new extremes.

Evidently very true. I heard a report last night where a neighbor said that Dykes had a run in with the bus driver the day before about turning around in front of his house. The next morning the bus driver brought him some eggs and marmalade as a peace offering. Dykes would not accept the gift and the driver left it at the end of his driveway. Dykes then evendently just got more upset, gave the gift to the neighbor and met the bus that afternoon, shot the drive and took the boy.

I went to south FL for a funeral this weekend and passed by the scene going and comming.

Neighbors and officials had described Dykes as a survivalist with "anti-government" views.

Good riddance.

He should forfeit all of his earthly belongings to the dead bus driver's family and to the little boy who he scarred for life.
