WASHINGTON -- Vice President Joe Biden said Thursday he has "no illusions" about the fight ahead to pass gun control legislation, but he told a room of about 300 mayors that it's not an impossible fight and urged them, as people on "the front lines," to pressure their lawmakers to get behind President Barack Obama's proposals. "We, you, the citizens can change the nation," Biden said during remarks at the U.S Conference of Mayors annual meeting. "I've been in this fight a long time. I have no illusions about the fight that's in front of us ... But I know full well the obstacles up against us are not impenetrable." Biden's remarks come a day after Obama unveiled a sweeping package of reforms aimed at stemming gun violence -- the boldest of its kind in least a generation. Some of Obama's recommendations could have enough bipartisan support in Congress to pass, such as requiring criminal background checks for all gun sales. But some of his other proposals face a far steeper climb, namely proposals for reinstating the assault weapons ban and restoring a 10-round limit on ammunition magazines. Nonetheless, the vice president said, the president is prepared to throw his full weight behind passing the entire package -- a direct response to last month's shootings in a Newtown, Conn., elementary school, but also more broadly in response to the mass shootings in recent years. "We're going to take this fight to the halls of Congress," he said. "We're going to take it to the American people, making our case and let the voices of the people be heard." During his nearly hour-long remarks, Biden focused largely on the need for universal background checks -- a topic that delivered him loud applause and one that is among Obama's biggest priorities. Currently, about 40 percent of gun purchases are made without a background check on the buyer, partly because of loopholes that allow people to walk into gun shows and buy firearms without mandated background checks. As he made the case for background checks and other measures, Biden emphasized that he and the president support the Second Amendment. He said he knew that some in the room "are deer hunters, bear hunters, game hunters." He pointed out that he, too, owns guns: a 20-gauge and a 12-gauge shotgun. The 12-gauge shotgun "has not been used in a while," he offered.

Nothing. If we could just do that, say with all the manpower the NRA wants to put into schools.....we would get a better control on all these weapons.

Becuase the NRA has spent the last couple of decades making sure that doesn't happen.

It isn't the weapons it's the crazy people wielding them and a media that makes rock stars out of them for weeks afterwards.

If you're suggesting that weapons are not part of the equation, you're either a fool or a liar.

The weapon is always a part of it no matter if its a gun, knife, bat, automobile etc.. When a gun is used the common denominator in all of these mass shootings is the mentally disturbed person behind the trigger. But, unlike the crazy person, a gun can do nothing on its own.

Nonsense. Guns make killing easier. Period. That's whay they are made for, to kill quicker and more efficiently than a knife or club or sword or bow an arrow. Guns were designed to enable anyone, with minimal training, to kill easily and quickly. The insistence of gun proponents in throwing knives, bats and cars into the mix is just plain stupid. A gun makes it easier for a crazy person, or anyone else, to kill of people. A crazy person can do something on his/her own, but it's hard to shoot up a school or a movie theater without a gun. And, when it comes to gun violence, there are thousands of shootings that aren't a crazy person with an agenda. This past New Year's, a 10 year old girl in Elkton MD was hit in the head by a bullet that was fired into the air in celebration. She's dead. You don't have to be crazy to kill somebody with a gun.

You are right, a gun in the hands of a determined evil person makes for a very effective tool if it's killing they have on their mind. But, if I had the choice of dealing with a gun by itself or a crazy person, the gun would get my choice everytime.

He's just starting a "War on Guns" which will have the same degree of success as the war on drugs.
I even voted for them, and now they've made me their enemy, at least on this issue.
Ignorant people shouldn't be allowed to influence decisions that effect us all, but there you go.
