Otto Zehm (1970–2006) was a mentally disabled man from Spokane, Washington who died on March 20, 2006, two days after being beaten, tasered multiple times, hogtied, gagged and sat upon by seven Spokane Police Officers until he passed out and never regained consciousness.[1] Zehm committed no crime and on May 30, 2006, the Spokane County coroner ruled the death a homicide.[2

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Otto_Zehm

Tell that to this poor guy

Do you suggest we get rid of cops?

Never said anything of the sort. But the shakeup in the Spokane PD is hilarious. If cops are allowed to, they will become just like these assholes. It's up to the people to make sure it doesn't happen. The apathy of the American people is exactly why this kind of shit happens. It has soaked into every aspect of American life, from guns, to cops, to lawmakers tapping feet in men's room stalls.

I agree some cops can be assholes. But, think of all the assholes your average cop has to deal with. I'm talking serious low life garbage.

I'll take a stab at it.

Like some have said, in every job there are going to be professionals as well as jacklegs.  The problem is, law enforcement is like no other job.  These guys carry guns, clubs and tasers and a mistake in judgment can create a life changing experience for someone.

Add this to the potential for emotional immaturity and/or adrenaline fueled abuse, and you can see that it's not unreasonable to expect a higher standard of professionalism from the police than you might from the green grocer.

You know, if your accountant, dentist or mechanic is having a bad day, they are still not likely to draw down on you with a weapon or start a high speed pursuit through a school zone because of some perceived act of disrespect.

I would have thought you guys would have naturally understood all this without this weird partisan pissiness.

I look at it like the same as in war, you're going to have some people hit by friendly fire. You try to minimize that as much as possible, but it happens. The main objective is more important though. And the main objective for the police force is to protect law abiding citizens. Rogue cops are minimized by Internal Affairs, but occasionally one is going to get through. They are usually not long on the job. But, if my daughters happen to be in a bad neighborhood the first thing I'm going to want to be around is a cop. There's a lot of low-life scum out there, and I can't protect them 24/7. I can protect them at home ... as long as Obama doesn't take away my gun.

This.

I would also add that law enforcement as a profession has a very spotty history of corrupt, and sometimes violent behavior. It is not unreasonable for a person who knows the history of the profession to be at least a little bit wary of police officers.

I know of one instant off hand that would prove your statement as bullshit. I know one youngster who is directionally challenged. He pulled over to ask some kids for directions. Their dad came out, cops were called, this young man was charged for child luring. The dad did not press charges but the cop did. The cop is claiming he 'saw skin', which is utter bullshit! The young man is incredibly naive and not very bright but a child lurer? I don't think so. Yet this dumb ass cop wants to press charges because he doesn't have to lead an exciting life himself. palm  And no.. this person is not in any way related to me.

Fine. I should have added "in general". Like I said, there are always bad apples in any large group of people.

Why do liberals always have such a hard on for cops? They keep a lot of garbage away from us.

Because when a cop messes up or crosses the line, it usually has much more serious consequences for the victimbecause the cop carries with him the weight of the law and in most cases will always get the benefit of the doubt just because he wears that uniform.

I wouldn't say "minimize", I'd say "reduced in numbers". There's a vast range of misuse of power and a lot of it likely never gets to the surface.

The only real question is what the net effect is of the legislation and law enforcement. In my opinion it's not at all unequivocally a net gain the way things are right now.

Of course you have data to reinforce these claims?

Conservative Playbook.

1. Use Bible to "hurt" all that aren't like you.

2. Use Bible to "forgive" your own extramarital affairs, lying and cheating, leading to a "new and better you".

3. Tell the voters that "Jesus has forgiven you".

Re: I **bleep** hate cops

Here's my issue with cops and police departments in general.

First off, when they were young, you would have recognized them in school as the class bully and/or the student 'hall monitor' or whatever they called them in your school.. Most of which enjoyed getting kids in trouble for the most minor infractions, drunk on the power, while always enjoying the fact that those same rules didn't apply to them.  Normal kids weren't typically attracted to either of those positions.

All grown up, these bullies become the office bully, the cop, or go into law, where they can bully via paperwork and the legal system.  That being said, there is a SMALL percentage of people who are attracted to the position to do a greater good for their community, but many of them are also corrupted along the way, as power corrupts.

Police departments are incredibly corrupted, and rely on money to operate.  Instead of being 100% fully funded, they are required to fund themselves thru means such as charity collections and fines.  Fines are among the dumbest and most senseless systems we have today, giving those with wealth a free pass on minor lawbreaking, while at the same time - those without wealth are punished harshly, just by the fact that a simple traffic ticket could easily be the amount of their electric bill for the month or food for the week.  When a bunch of cars are going 70MPH on the highway, who do you think gets pulled over?  If you guessed the guy driving the oldest and most beat up car, you are correct.  The cops assume they might find further, multiple violations, like expired inspection or registration, insurance issues, bench warrants.. etc.. most of which are symptoms of financial insecurity- think about it, how many people don't get their car inspected because they just can't be bothered?  No.. people don't get them inspected because there can be one or two minor things that stop it from passing, that they cannot afford to fix- so our solution is to penalize them financially for being too poor?  It's senseless.

If they were REALLY interested in stopping violations (especially traffic), they would fine people by assigning community service-  think about it, say 20 hours community service for speeding, 40 for blowing a red light.. the rich would be equally as penalized as the poor- now THAT'S justice being fair.

Won't ever happen, because it's not a justice system, it's a business.  Criminals make cops, private jails, lawyers, judges, etc.. wealthy.  We are criminalizing our whole population slowly and surely, and who best to round up the scum.. bullies.  Who best to look the other way at injustice?  Bullies.  Who best to care less about traumatizing the very people in society they grew up in?  Bullies.

They enjoy it.

Re: I **bleep** hate cops

Well, it appears I finally have a couple of reasons to get annoyed by the new forum format.

First, I despise this chained quote 'feature' that gloms up every damn response in a thread.  I have crappy vision and made some fairly egregious typos in my post and while I fixed them pretty quick, I was quoted before I could repair them and now, I have to look at that mess in every quote stack that includes it.

Secondly, now that hitting 'enter' automatically jumps a line space, many paragraphs are separated by two lines now, making for unnecessarily huge response windows.

There, finally got my forum gripes in.

yea... okay dude, whatever.  I don't reply to peoples posts with useless responses designed to do nothing more than intimidate them, with exception to retaliation as is obvious above...  You OTOH have clearly stated your intentions, and have now backed them up.  I'm done with you, I don't waste time arguing with people like you, so GFY, good day.
