Yeah, the bones were DNA tested and found to match two of Richard's descendants. As a former King of England, they are being treated with a surprising (I guess) amount of respect, despite being 550 years old and his piss-poor rep in history (Mainly due to Shakespeare, who, for reasons of keeping his head, had to suck up to the Tudors. Henry Tudor aka Henry VII, defeated Richard III to claim the crown and end the War of the Roses. Henry VII doesn't get the play Henry VIII does but he was actually far more interesting.).

Interesting! "My kingdom for a parking spot!"
The article I saw mentions *ahem* 'humiliation injuries', such as might have been made by a halberd to the buttocks. ![]()
I've been reading a lot about the Plantagenet kings and have been thinking about doing a tour of the historical sites. Gotta add the car park to the list! ![]()

I did hear the tudors did a lot of writing of that history.

I'm mostly into the period from Henry II to Henry IV -- it drops off a bit for me after that, but the War of the Roses and the Edward IV reign are also interesting.
That mini-series BBC did on Henry VIII was unwatchable for me, but lots of people recommended it.

The skeleton of Richard III was found buried under a parking lot.
Id like to know why the kind was buried in an apparently unmarked tomb close to Bosworth Field instead of having his body returned to London for an interment befitting a king.

Wasn't this, like, the plot to 48 hours?

Richard was in a war for the crown that was taken from him in that last battle. As the loser, I don't think the winners were planning on a big funeral for him. It says that a monestary ended up burying him under their chapel.

The families hated each other and had been at war for years. When Richard III died in battle that day, it was the end of his family's rule. I think I read somewhere that monks retrieved his body and buried it.
I still want to know who killed his nephews. The Richard III Society is hoping to clear Richard III name, but to me this is still the missing piece of the puzzle. Richard needed his nephews out of the way to become King and I'm failry certain he must have had something to do with their murder.

Consider the Yorkists had done what they could to completely exterminate the Lancasters, it's not that surprising that he was buried in ignominiously. One of Henry VII's better moves from the view of healing the wounds fot he past was to marry a Yorkist...

If Richard III had many guns, this wouldn't have happened. ![]()

Historians today don't simply take the "official" histories at their word. They seek other contemporary documents to paint a picture of what was going on. It could be a letter, a deed, a contract, a planting record, church records of baptisms, marriages and deaths, etc. IOW, primary source documents as opposed to secondary sources, like histories. Not my area but I'd guess they've done a lot of this. In fact, the site was described in the 1600's as Richard's burial site and they were a few hundred yards off from where they thought the bones would be.

I read the book, so I am quite familiar with the War of the Roses and who the losers were, but even a losing King usually recieves a burial deserving of his (former) social standing.

A lot of people don't realize that Richard III was actually a very accomplished dancer, in spite of his physical deformities. Hence the line, "Now is the winter of our discotheques..."
