The new trend up here is the 4 on the floor kick drum & tamborine thing with acoustic acts. It's driving me crazy. Some of the guys are adding so much crap they look like the orginal one man bands from the early 30's. IMO it sounds lame as hell after about 10 minutes and they look silly. I took my 13 and 8 year olds out tonight and we saw a trio with two kick drums. I had to tell me kids not to laugh in front of them because it's rude.

On a whim I went to a cigar box guitar festival last year where I saw a guy (Johnny Lowebow) simultaneously play two kick drums, hi-hat and guitar -- and drum which he hit with a stick he held in his strumming hand. I was entertained.
Someone caught it on video: http://youtu.be/0LO5bB1ERdg?t=17s
For reasons unclear to me, the cigar box guitar musical community around here seems to be big on one man bands.

Yup, the folk revival is to blame. Fortunately I love the folk revival. Though mostly when done by professionals.
Slightly related- I saw Avett Brothers last weekend... perhaps the best entertainers I've ever seen. But I am prone to superlatives.
