I have a pretty low budget, so I've been considering the focusrite scarlet 2i2.
It seems perfect for my needs....for now.
It's not something I'll be doing in the near future, but I may want to track some simple drums and/or use a stand alone mic pre for single track recordings of guitars and vocals.
Are there any reasonably inexpensive products out there that have either of these features:
- 4 XLR inputs
- ability to bypass the internal pres for use with an external one
- insert points for compressors etc.
I don't need all of these things, and I could get by without them. But I'd like to anticipate my future needs to try to future-proof my purchases as much as possible.
Also, I use Beyerdynamic DT-770 pro headphones. They have an impedance of 250 ohms per side.
I've read of people having problems getting sufficient volume pairing a low level interface with high impedance headphones - is this likely to be an issue for me?

I've only got dynamic mics at the moment, but I'd like to add something a little nicer than an sm58 for vocals - probably an LDC - in future. So getting something without phantom power is kinda the opposite of what I want to achieve.

I've been looking at interfaces recently (and am also looking at the 2i2) but one of the interfaces which looks like it fulfils your requirements (no personal experience with it though) is the Akai EIE or EIE pro. Not sure how good the preamps are, but there are 4 of them, there are 4 inserts, which means (as long as you don't mind going unbalanced from your other pre) you should be able to bypass the pre's by plugging into the insert (probably want to check on this for the EIE, but you can usually do it with inserts).
As I said, no personal experience, and I'm not sure how the preamps compare to the 2i2, nor what the phones output is like... But reasonable price, 4 ins and 4 inserts...
