The only answer to that is to use whatever works best for you & the recording.

Theres a lot of software thats not so hot & a lot thats awesome!

& Vice Versa

Theres a lot of hardware thats crap & a lot thats awesome!

So it depends on what you own, your goal, & taste.

I use the Evolution keyboard around 60 keys size, can't remember the model right now. Works very well with Reason, plenty of assignable levers and knobs.

So you're looking For Mental Re-assurance? Against Utopian Devices In Obsolescense for about 1773 times?

being a "newbie" myself Im sure im out of line for saying so but thats why we are junior members.. We dont have it all figured out yet. Ive spent a lot of time on here looking for the information I wanted and have honestly found it to be frustrating. Even with this list.. It is nice to be able to ask a question and hear feedback from experienced people such as yourself who have actually used certain products and can offer some advice. If its a serious problem to ask what others think works well then perhaps you can educate me. Hope im not offending anyone as its not my intention. Take care.

Anyone familiar with Yamaha MSP10 Studio powered monitors?

Hi folks,

I have a chance to pick up a pair of used Yamaha MSP10 Studio (the later Studio version, not the original) powered monitors in Japan for roughly $400/pair. One of the tweeters has been mashed in; replacement tweeter is ~$120. Otherwise looks to be in fantastic shape, like most used gears in Japan.

Seems like a good deal. I could not find past sales on eBay and not much info on HC. I have the original (made in USA, I might add) Mackie HR-824s, but left them in storage before I came.

All reviews from early 2000's seem positive. Anybody intimately familiar/using these monitors? Wish I could bring them back to my apt. and test, but Japan doesn't work that way. All sales final.

Any comments much appreciated.

Re: H-C Gear Recommendations

I posted a thread on this, but I guess I should have posted my question here....

I'm trying to build a computer to record with...just something that I can use as a hobbyist...not looking for top-dollar stuff. I'm hoping to get 4 - 8 gigs of RAM, and a fair size hard drive, but I'm not sure about what kind of processor or soundcard to get. I'm not sure if I want to use an interface or have an outboard mixer...I'm the only one I'll be recording, so I would say that I plan on using 4 inputs at the most at once. I'm not sure what my budget would be, but I can say that I'm wanting something worth the money that sounds decent.

Any suggestions?

Re: H-C Gear Recommendations

My band and I are going to record in a week or two, and the one thing i've wanted to invest in from the beginning is a compressor. obviously, they get better the more you spend. I don't have 4000$ to drop on a compressor, between us collectively we could probably spend about 250-300$. So I'm looking for a rackmount digital compressor. any suggestions? also, is it better to treat the sound pre-amp, or would treating a pre recorded track yield the same effect?

Re: H-C Gear Recommendations

Hey guys, I was wondering if any of yall have any experience with the Tascam 2488neo? I am looking to get my first multitrack recorder and I want something with enough inputs and memory space to record a whole band. I am just starting to get into multitracks as its cheaper then trying to get studio time and letting someone else tell us how our music should sound, ya know? Anyway, MF has it in a package deal that looks decent since it comes with monitors and all that and a condenser mic for vocals which would be cool. But if its a bad one, what else would yall recommend?

Re: H-C Gear Recommendations

On the topic of stand-alone multi-trackers.... I hate the idea of totally giving up the plethora of possibilities and sounds a computer offers. What I would like to do is use the computer as a sound module of sorts, running a midi controller or guitar into its, utilizing programs like guitar rig and massive to create whatever I am looking for, then running a line out to the computer and recording in real time. I brought this idea up in another thread. People thought I was crazy for not using vst's and a computer based DAW because of all the flexibility etc etc. I would still like to go this route if possible without excess latency..... Really I pondered the computer based DAW for a while, but I am burned out on compatibility issues and driver bs. Finding something that works with current OS's and has a reasonable amount of longevity requires that I spend a $1000 for an interface.....

External means USB/firewire. If youre using the ext HD for storage after recording to the main drive, thats fine, but I wouldnt try recording directly to it.

Re: H-C Gear Recommendations

This seems to be a good place for this question. I have a Tascam us428 recording interface for my laptop, but it does not have an actual sound card for generating MIDI sounds. What would be a good low-latency sound card that would give similar quality sounds to my Yamaha keyboard? PC Card or firewire would be preferred.
