It's been trying to break for about a year now; finally went in the cold cold morning moments. I had to go in from the passenger side & open it from the inside.
The part is around $42, shipped; replacement doesn't look too difficult.
It's the first thing that has broken on the Tacoma. I have around 97K miles on it; bought it new in '04.

I bought the Toyota for the reliability; so far it's been very good. Door handles are a high-wear item; you'd think they'd be made out of something stronger. :idk:
Many of the cars I've owned have had door handle problems due to cheap materials being used.

The driver's side power window switch broke on a Mazda Protege that I used to own. The part alone was over $300.
That car made my wife and I promise to each other that we would never own another Mazda.....ever. Transmission (Ford designed and built) blew at 60k miles and after that, it was downhill from there. Starter assembly, power window switch, front suspension, radiator, trunk release cable, rear suspension.......When the engine stared pinging, we surrendered and waved the white flag. We sold it with less than 80k miles.
My '94 Toyota pickup has had only one repair since I bought almost 20 years ago. I replaced the washer fluid pump a few months ago ($15 for the part). Other than that, it's just been routine maintenace and wear items (knocks on wood). I love my Toyota!

There's a few guys here w/ bobbed beds on their Tacomas. The guys I wheel with are pretty serious about it. Most are running lifts & bigger tires, off-road bumpers, sliders, lockers, etc. etc.
They let me tag along in my mostly stock Taco anyway; it does pretty well off-road. Thanks to their encouragement & help w/ spotting, I've taken my truck up rocks that I would not have believed it would go up. I do have good tires on it; BFG Mud-terrains & BFG All-Terrains, depending on where I'm wheeling.

I bet some do the exhaust that runs upward too. I see some of the crazy kids here in town that do that to keep the water out of the the pipes. I guess that's what it's for and I guess it works.
Kinda costly when you break something, but with a spotter, many stock trucks will clear alot more rocks and trails than I would take one on.
Fun fun fun is the name of the game, and it is a blast.
