Distributors are dumb.

I no longer own any vehicles that have a distributor.

OTOH, coil packs can be dumb also.

Does it ever warm up enough that the heater/defroster works?

The 6.5 with the turbo (like mine) heats up fairly quick. The 6.2 normally aspirated I used to have was a cold truck. It wouldn't get very warm just idling. You had to start driving it before you got any heat. It did get 32 mpg though. The 6.5 turbo might get 20 mpg with a tail wind.
