I approve of this thread. The Dead suck. Jerry's tone was grating most of the time.

I saw them play once at the Providence Rhode Island civic center (now called "the dunk", after Duncan Donughts). I don't remember much of the concert other than several dead heads tipping their cowboy hats to the band, while they were playing. Seemed odd.

We can come up with some type of pain threshold later on.

They usually got better in the second set.  First set was often boring until towards the end when they got warmed up.

Re: Grateful Dead

They were around for so long, that there were different eras, the last one being an error.

But, for many years thy were the top grossing road act in music. They consistently had great income, but were, for the most part, broke personally, because of bad deals, and their equipment, and noncomformity to commercial rules. Oh, and maybe their drug habits.

I was a deadhead for a few decades, but those times are over. Now, they are relics. I went to see the spinoffs,, and the experience was just not the same. And the guys come off as pompous and full of themselves now, crotchety old men who are living in the past, and milking "dead On Ice" syndrome.

I don't think the bassist and drummers ever were, but I could be wrong.

I don't think the original keyboard player, Tom Constanten, was, either. He was only in the group during the early LSD era.

During one of their middle periods, I remember reading about Phil Lesh's bass set up.
Supposedly, his bass was wired so he had a pickup for each string, which then went to four individual MacIntosh pre- and power amps, then a bunch of different speaker cabs, with like 18"'s for the E, 15's for the A, 12's for the D, and 10's for the G. I don't know how accurate this is, might just be Deadhead legend. They did travel with their own PA and sound guys for a long time, not the most cost efficient way to run a major touring act, I'd imagine.

I lost interest in them about the time they brought Keith & Donna into the band. I can understand trying to round out the band's sound with keyboards and an extra voice to get a little more consistency in their live shows, but really their shows just got too homogenzed after that.

You can believe me because, I never lie, and I'm always right.

They never took the easy way. Always reaching for the moment. I was never on the bus, but I respect what they did. Yes the whirling unwashed dervishes were annoying, but I can think of a lot of other groups whos fans are much morso. Most Dead shows I attended were a lighthearted fun occasion. I saw them once in the Blues for Allah period, and 3 or 4 times in the 90s, whenever they came around close by.
Jerry is probably my fav electic guitarist. He was a bluegrasser/folkie at heart same as me, but he avoided cliches like the plague. His collaberations with Hunter were genius to me. His style was deep. Try to cop it and see.

Re: Grateful Dead

If ppl like them, it's no skin off of my nose. They just bored me so bad, I don't think I ever heard a whole song of theirs if I could avoid it. I am sure they knew how to play their instruments, but they just played boring-ass shit.

Plus the band hasn't been around for close to 20 years now.

I have a few of there early albums, so it's not like I didn't give em a fair shake

Re: Grateful Dead

People caught up in all the attendant shit at a show often missed the boat. Even the band was weary of that shit but hey, the hand that feeds...

They had a working repertoire of about 400 songs, often pulled out without really any practice. The fact that 99% of bands- especially today- play the same set list night after night..,it would beyond tedious and is..,as to whether the band rocked, depended on the era and the night. You listen to stuff from 69-77!and it is really some special tightness. Jerry was a monster on guitar back then. Tat they became lesser players and began to rely on a certain amount of fluff was where it all started to fall apart.

I ammo Deadhead, but I have seen so many bands in my life that I know the Dead, when they put it together, we're unlike any band that I ever heard. All those idiots at the scene couldn't ruin the peaking and amazing synergy that occurred. It was almost all Jerry's playing, as he was the guy with that juice so few ever have. Man he could play.
